Mattress hell -- any suggestions?

I don’t remember, did you say you’re not interested in memory foam mattress is? I fall asleep on my side or stomach (but wake up on my back.) I have never had a mattress as comfortable or supportive as the memory foam mattress from Ikea. Since we only spent about $400 on that mattress I can only imagine how incredibly comfortable and supportive the more expensive memory foam mattresses must be.

This is a timely thread as we’re currently shopping for a new mattress. We want to replace the Tempurpedic that gets too hot (that we’ve endured for too long). Has anyone tried a latex mattress such as Zenhaven? If so, what are your thoughts?

@Wellspring, my kids all have Termpurpedic memory foam mattresses and I don’t care for them; they’re too soft.

@NJres, I’d head right out to the Original Mattress Company if I could, based on your experience but I am on the west coast and they don’t have stores out here.

@blackeyedsusan, hopefully someone will have experience with latex mattresses. I do not. What are the advantages?

My husband and I have debated for at least a year on what new mattress to get. We finally decided on Black Friday enticed by a 25% off discount and purchased a bed-in-a-box - a Brooklyn Bedding Aurora. it’s a hybrid foam and coils. Slept on it first night last night and I loved it! I usually like to start on my side but I end up on my back. Sometimes I start on my stomach also though so I do a bit of everything.

The advantages of latex are its support and ability to relieve pressure point discomfort, as well as it being resistant to dust, mildew and dust mites. It’s also can be a natural product and breathable.

We purchased a Serta icomfort mattress a few weeks ago. If you purchase one, be patient. It took several days to break in-it started out too firm-like sleeping on a drum. It had a noticeable odor the first several days as well. We really like it now. The aches and pains we were experiencing with our old mattress are gone.

We purchased an Icomfort Serta (Savant), 5 years ago. @dadof2d , it was the best mattress ever for the first 8 months. Unbelievable. All my back problems ceased. We did the full memory foam, firm, gel infused .

Then it started to break, down, where we felt like it we were in a dent. We have turned that bed 90 degrees, along with 180. When it got so bad my back was hurting again, we actually flipped it and bought a 5 inch topper that lasted a year. We’ve flipped it back over and have been living with it for awhile. We need another bed.

Maybe it was the savant, but we are spooked as to what kind to get next time. I’d like to try the temperpedic, but really worry about how hot everyone says it is.

Why is this so hard?

We have a bed-in-a-box brand mattress that we really like; we did add a gel topper for DH. DD has a Saatva mattress and loves it.

Does anyone know a firm, (no pillow top, no gel, no foam), old fashion mattress? I was talked into buying a pillow top with wool, (don’t worry, it’s got a cooling effect, no, it doesn’t).

If your mattress feels hot in the winter… the likely culprit is your bedding. Get a lighter blanket - it solves a lot of “too hot” issues.

Purchased a Tempurpedic within the last year or so. I was very concerned about being too hot as I used to get get too warm on our conventional spring mattress. However the comfort and support it provided in our testing sessions was enough to persuade me to try it. So glad we did…I don’t wake up with the pressure point aches and pains that I used to and have no issue with being too warm. They have come a long way with materials to combat that issue and it is not a problem for us at all. So just don’t write off the foam mattresses for that reason alone, they are making progress with it.

I have cool, cotton sheets, sleep in a summer nightgown and only use a top sheet. I have a ceiling fan on low or medium most nights. We live most of the time in Florida, so the airconditioner is on as well. It is a rare occasion when I need a cotton blanket. I considered a cooling mattress, but decided the motor noise would drive me crazy.

I run very hot. I sleep with the head of the bed against an open window all winter (in the midwest.) I don’t find the memory foam mattress to be any hotter than a conventional mattress. Maybe they solved that problem.

A few things:

  1. yes I also had abdominal surgery and couldn’t sleep on my stomach for months - cured me forever and now I’m a total back sleeper.

  2. love my Saatva soft

  3. hated tempurpedic in the past and returned it

  4. of the basic “name brand” mattresses I think there are only 2-3 manufacturers total- they make essentially the same types of mattresses for everyone and just label them differently based on the outlet you purchase them from. If you do a deep dive you can find the “concordance” tables for what = what for each company.

  5. I would encourage anyone to seek out the most expensive mattress you can afford - even getting into the more elite brands. Life’s too short to not get a great night’s sleep.
