Maui - hints, tips and more?

Make a Costco stop on your way to the condo!

And I second Mama’s Fish House!

For cheaper fun, we really enjoy stopping at the Surfing Goat farm and picking up some goat cheese. We usually pair this with a trip to the botanical garden. We also like a visit to Iao Valley.

We also did snorkeling on our own at Black Rock which was great. And of course my kids had to join those jumping off the rock. We were staying nearby and were able to walk, but public parking is somewhat limited.

@Happy2Help Costco…added to my list. I heard that in some of them they have fresh poke. Yum!

@Singersmom07 Goat farm! Yes! We adore goats!

@mom2and Black Rock snorkel…now on the list! Don’t know about the rock jumping tho.

The most fun outing of our honeymoon was snorkeling in a fish preserve on Maui. The fish are unafraid of you and some even come to eat fish food pellets out of your hand. We took along underwater cameras and had a blast! I’m pretty sure it was this location:

@CTmom2018 - that snorkel spot looks amazing! I bookmarked it.

Buy POG juice, Rum and limes. Maui Jungle juice!

Wouldn’t recommend Molokini cruise…expensive and the time we went the fish were just meh. Instead, check out Ahihi Kinau Underwater Preserve. Bring water shoes as the entrance is rocky. Seriously the best snorkeling, second only to our own little beach in Honokawai (where a family of turtles lives and plays!). Here’s a write up: http://www.hawaiisnorkelingguide.com/ahihi_kinau.html

In Lahaina we enjoyed dinner and a hilarious adult only magic show at Warren and Annabelles. Fun time!

ETA: @CTmom2018 we didn’t feed the fish…how cool!

We stayed at the Sheraton, where the Black rock is. Son loved it. 7 pools. I’d have to go back to long ago post to find all the neat things we did on and after ride to H… Stopped at the Fish restaurant and ate at bar. Had lunch at a plantation and took a tram around their farm. Took a helicopter ride over the island. Did a luau dinner. At 2:00 am, on top of mountain to see glorious sunrise. Son and every one but me rode bikes down. I went with the guide, as can’t do serious hand brakes. Guide are so informative and entertaining. Had crepes for breakfast. Wonderful vacation.

I should add that while I did hour hikes with my son, he went alone on 4 hour hike. He started alone, but came back with a group. Lots of dirt and scrapes on his legs. He had a great time.

@shellz - I’ve bookmarked the preserve. We’re definitely doing Molokini with the Pacific Whale Foundation. I don’t know what “POG juice” is…and forgot all about the adult magic show, wow that’s been on Maui forever!

@bookworm - when I’m not on my phone I’ll search for your lengthy post

POG: passion, orange, guava mmmmmm… ono!

@Happy2Help is correct! Get a couple gallons at Costco! Good “unleaded” for breakfast and “fully leaded” at cocktail time! Enjoy!

Oh, and if you want a delicious breakfast treat, buy a REALLY ripe papaya and cut it in half. Scoop out seeds and squeeze a bunch of fresh lime on it. The flesh should be very soft, so ask the produce workers to help you pick one. The one I was about to choose would have been way under ripe. Thankfully the produce man stepped in and handed me a very soft fruit. I was Leary…but it was so good!

Happy hour at the Mana Kai Maui at the very southern end of Kihie is really good, and they have half price sushi.
There’s a place called Cafe at lei that’s not expensive and is very good.
Coconuts is good.
Sarentos on the Beach is very good, but pretty expensive.
We love walking along the beach where Sarentos is. You can walk from there for miles to the left as you face the beach, past all the expensive Wailea hotels and $$$$ houses, all the way to Polo Beach. We take that walk often when we are there. You can also walk a couple of miles in the other direction.
Buy groceries, alchoholic and chocolate covered macadamias at Costco. A friend swears by their Mai Tai concoction, alcohol included, but I’ve never had it.

@Happy2Help - POG = passion, orange, guava

Ah, right!

We hiked the Waihee Ridge trail, which was great. The upper part was very muddy so DH and I did not go all the way up (I was worried about twisting my ankle on the way down) but our sons did and even below the mud line it was great. Hike from the sun into clouds, with beautiful views.

@mom2and - oh my gosh! Just read about the Waihee Ridge trail - it’s now on the list! What time of day did you start and about how long fit it take? 5 miles r/t isn’t very “far”, but could take a long time. I prefer a morning hike and that’s recommended here. Thanks for this one.

My wife and I will be in Maui in mid-October - great tips here! We’ll be staying at a condo with outdoor gas grill. Anyone have advice for a local fish market or grocery store with good fresh fish to grill?

I’d actually recommend against the Molokini snorkel. I wish I could embed photos here so you could see what I mean, but it’s too popular and over-touristed. The other snorkelers kick up the water to the extent that visibility is seriously reduced. You’d get better snorkeling, and with a higher chance of also seeing sea turtles doing their lazy flapping around, right off the beach in Wailea. http://thevacationgals.com/return-trip-to-the-best-snorkeling-in-maui-hawaii/

I’ve seen Iao mentioned once here; Iao Valley State Park is very, very pretty and an easy, accessible hike…more like a walk. I think I saw Paia mentioned, maybe not, but it’s a nice little Hawaiian town that’s not run over by mainlander tourists yet. I mean, it has some of the red dirt t-shirt types of shops there but you can find the real deal, and it’s chill and a nice pit stop at least for cheap eats. You’ll probably be in Kehei at some point; you can drive from there to Makena, which I LOVE. Bring sturdy shoes (not slippas/flip flops) because the beach is all a’a rock, but it is stunning and you can easily get the sense of being alone on the planet there. The sea turtles and cattle egrets are all over the place.

I love Hawaii. I hope you have the best time there.

If you are anywhere near this they are supurb! http://fishmarketmaui.com You can watch the fish come in if you are early. They can prepare the fish for you to grill or cook with rubs or marinades. I always go with their recommendations and they have not steered us wrong. It can get a little pricey but the quality is excellent.

@Taiwegian If you can mention the general area you’re staying at, someone might know of something. We’ve usually just got something at a place that’s convenient like Napili Market. There are several grocery stores in Lahaina - one across the highway from the Safeway has a nice fish selection. The Fish Market in Honokowai north of Kaanapali that a lot of people swear by, but we haven’t got anything from there.

Costco’s fish is fresh and is a great deal. You can get started by buying your first dinner to grill at Costco and then replenishing and supplementing with grocery store and fish market buys if Costco is too far from your condo.
