mcb emphasis question - which is easiest?

what is the easiest mcb major? I am doing mcb, I am not premed, yes I am interested in this major, so don’t give me the spiel. But am currently about to declare neuro, but I slacked off my first few years and I need to take 3+3 mcb classes in fall+spring.

so I know all the curricula are being changed, but I’m graduating next spring. so notwithstanding, what is the EASIEST? thanks!!

Taking 3 MCB courses a semester is not pleasant. If you’re really set on getting a MCB degree, then I’d suggest CDB: Physiology. This track looks like the most versatile new track. The other emphases have strict elective choices that just won’t play out very well with only 2 semesters left.

My suggestion:
Summer 09- MCB 102
Fall 09- MCB 104, IB 131, MCB 136
Spring 10- MCB 133L and another elective of your choice

hey thanks a lot, I had settled on Physiology myself. Do you think graduate schools might frown on this emphasis, compared to something like BMB?

Also, how difficult are MCB 136 and 133L? I know about 104 and I hear 131 is very fun…but I have no idea about the other two. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t think graduate schools will care much since, in the end, you’ll have a Bachelor’s degree in MCB, and not just physiology. BMB is a really great program that provides solid foundation for research, but MCB itself should provide you a strong enough background for research anyway.

I don’t know anything about MCB 104 since it’s brand new, but IB 131 is very easy. I heard MCB 133L is just like MCB 130L with additional labs focusing on physiology. I personally took IB 132 for physiology and that class had awful professors when I took it (Kaufer and Brooks). Many people have said that MCB 136 is more cellular-based and has more reasonable questions on the midterms.

^OP will not get into IB 131 easily, at all

http://infobears.berkeley.edu:3400/osc/?_InField1=RESTRIC&_InField2=43180&_InField3=09D2

Open seating is filled. Any undeclared student will be instantly waitlisted.

By the time the OP could get their MCB papers filed and processed by Campbell Hall the seats reserved for “Students with a major of Molecular and Cell Biology - Plan II, Emphasis 2 or Molecular and Cell Biology - Plan II, Emphasis 3 or Public Health” will probably be gone.

but the class has 732 seats??

it is a a class in extremely high demand

It’s one of those useless classes that everyone takes to pad their GPA’s. If you can’t get into that class, then take another class from the massive elective list. That’s the good thing about the physiology track-- versatility.

CDB is the easiest.

@anon5524485: How many students do you think will get off the waitlist?

I was searching about it and found some MCB mail archive thing

If you guys really want to take IB 131, you can get into it for this summer

Diamond does not teach it in summer, so it might not be so easy.
