McCombs? Worth It? w/o BHP?

@Riversider I am not ‘annoyed’, I am just suggesting that if you are going to make sweeping generalizations that you have some basis for it - back up your assertions. If you make an assertion, it’s your responsibility to back it up, not the person who is skeptical.

I suppose what does annoy me is people spreading misinformation. Also what is annoying is that so many young people are being crushed by debt because they go to schools they cannot afford because they buy into this kind of narrative: that there are ‘top’ schools that the ‘top’ students get into and if they don’t buy into it their future isn’t what it should be. That’s not a healthy way to look at the admissions process. Additionally, seeking the kind of external validation that comes from applying to, getting into and then paying money one doesn’t have to attend those ‘top’ schools isn’t particularly healthy either. I don’t know if you are student that has been suckered, or a parent that invests your ego in your child’s accomplishments, but either way own that what you putting out there is simply your own perception and not some unassailable ‘truth’.

Please PM me if you have some advice for the best way to get instate tuition. I’m accepted to Mccombs for this coming year and am trying to decide between it and another school. Getting instate tuition is a huge factor in that. Thanks for any help you can provide.

“Any student fortunate enough to get admitted to UT should go.” I am trying to convince my senior of this. She was capped and instead of waiting 32 weeks to be on the main campus she is looking at Texas Tech and UNT.

i’m confused; oos are able to establish texas residency for instate tuition? my friend’s friend just got accepted oos to moody and he said his family is buying a little apartment in texas for very cheap rent to get instate tuition. when i told my mom about it she said it’s not allowed bc if that was possible everyone would do it. are you guys talking about doing that or something else?

It is not so simple as buying a cheap apartment, but it can be done by the savvy with money.

@saltypretzel Years ago, and I am not sure if the law has changed or not, this would have been impossible. Because even if you live locally if you started attending a school within the FIRST year of living in TX for the remainder of your education you would not be considered in state. We bought a house here in 1999 and I wanted to take a class at the community college. I was also considering grad school at UT. What the folks at UT told me then was that if I took a class within that first 12 months of us being here, even at ACC, even though we had a mortgage on a house, and my husband was employed and that’s why we moved to TX, in the eyes of UT, we moved to TX for me to attend school and I’d always be on the hook for OOS tuition. I would contact the university directly to ask the question.

I don’t know if the rules have changed since then but I met a family from CA at my son’s orientation in June 2016. They purchased a campus area condo for their son to live in which at the time was around $200K and he was able to get in-state tuition for his 2nd-4th years. He lived in the condo but I don’t think that the student has to. But he/she does have to listed as a legal owner of the property in Texas.

is it even worth it to spend 200k on a condo for instate tuition?? thats crazy

@saltypretzel Sure it is. The property isn’t going to depreciate. And it’s rental income.

In my CA friend’s case, they paid about $200K for a 1 bedroom condo in 2016. They saved about $75K in tuition costs over 3 years and that condo is probably worth $50K more. They collected rent the first year they owned the condo and the last 3 years the son had a roommate so they collected rent. But it can be any Texas property I believe. Doesn’t have to be something that is student occupied.

OP: Whether or not UT-Austin McCombs is worth it without BHP is relative to your other options.

Of course, McCombs is an excellent value for one who wants to major in business, but it would be helpful to know your other options.
