Meal Ideas to take to a Family When the Mom is Hospitalized

The great thing about both of those on-line programs that were posted ( thank you) is that people can see what others are bringing, so they can bring different meals. I think I am going to go get some disposable containers. Trying to return things is just one more stressor.

As someone who was on the receiving end of meals I say thank you. Thank you for any meals that made it possible for my family to eat something that wasn’t pizza. Did we like some dishes more than others?

Yes. But it didn’t matter because it was in my house and ready to go.

The poached salmon was a hit, the takeout spaghetti and meatballs were great. The lasagna fantastic. Baked chicken…fantastic. But wait…dinner was there…and there was a semblance of normalcy.

Baked marinated chicken pieces…great. Barbeque chicken…Rice reheats well…I make salade nicoise, Chinese chicken salad (Gerard’s salad dressing) (poach chicken breast add to salad that has cilantro, salad greens, green onions and crunchy noodles, sweet red pepper, and you are done.

And dessert…cookies, brownies…

So, I am working from Sop14’s Mom’s suggestion to start and making my BBQ beef for the first meal tonight. Plus I will include rolls, salad, and watermelon. I need to figure out dessert. I also bought a pancake mix in a bottle and some syrup for a breakfast. There are plenty of adults in the house, so someone might feel like mixing up some pancakes one morning.

Several neighbors and I will meet today to see whether there is anything else we need to do. Thanks everybody.

Second the recommendation for Lotsa Helping Hands. Our church & neighborhood use it for arranging dinners, as well as rides for kids to/from sports, etc.

It’s great, as people can type up exactly what they are going to bring, so you don’t repeat and you can specify number of people to serve, as well as food allergies/intolerences. (god forbid my family ever needs this due to 1 picky eater, 1 gluten-free, and 1 gluten-free vegetarian).

My go-to meal for this was a sliced pork tenderloin with green beans and mashed potatoes. Pure comfort food. The tenderloin & green beans were from Trader Joes & the mashed potatoes from a box, but amped up with garlic powder, pepper and lots of sour cream & butter.

Also second the idea of a cooler on the steps. This allows you to drop it off in the specified time window & you don’t need to bother the family. I always used a disposible container - don’t know what others did.
