Measles outbreaks

In the past when I wanted the 1st shingles shot that came out, Costco was the cheapest place to get it AND had it in stock. That was 17 years ago but they often have lower prices than competitors in pharmacy.

Wouldn’t it be better if we all got smallpox, Ebola, etc. ? Survival of the fittest. To extrapolate, let’s not treat cancer

And who needs dental hygiene? Wasn’t life grand in the 19th century when babies routinely died in infancy, women died in childbirth, and the tough cougars who made it to 50 got fitted with wooden teeth?

YLE writes about vitamin A and measles.

Can’t remember which paper I saw this in, but the father of the Texas child who died of measles basically has no remorse about not vaccinating his child. Says it was “God’s will.”

I guess “God’s will” is a figurative get out of jail free card for just about anything.

Why isn’t it God’s will that a vaccine was created to protect people???!

There is an oft repeated story about a man on the roof of a house during a flood – trees float by within reach, a boat comes by to help, a helicopter, etc
and the man says no, God will protect him.

And then of course he drowns and goes to heaven and asks God why He didn’t save him, and the reply is “I finally sent you a helicopter for crying out loud, what else did you want?”

I think about this joke/story a lot. Why are we still trying to solve problems where the solution was at hand 20 years ago? Thanks for posting.

There was a COVID-19 version of this story, where someone refuses Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen vaccines and then dies of COVID-19.
“Why didn’t You save me?”
“I offered you three vaccines, what else did you want?”

Will we be seeing the measles version of this story soon?

The family with the child who died were very conservative Mennonite, closely related to Amish. It’s a very patriarchal culture and until the Bush years, they really held themselves separate from the “world” and didn’t participate in politics. But the Republicans saw them as ripe for picking since they are very uneducated and have conservative social views. Schooling stops at 8th grade generally and the government either makes carveouts for them or looks the other way. I doubt the father was vaccinated unless there was a public health nurse during his childhood who built a relationship with the community and earned their trust. Their theology is very much a “the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away” understanding of how God works. So they pray for healing but accept it when it doesn’t come.

I share that story a lot.

The poor children have no agency or choice. I doubt many children would choose to suffer from a disease that a small poke and a bit of discomfort could render harmless. We as a society get to pay for the increased medical costs of people who get bad cases of these dangerous conditions that COULD have been prevented!

Measles can have a rare but fatal complication that can reveal itself years later. Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) occurs when the virus enters the brain and evades the immune system while there.

The TX/NM outbreak grew to 300 plus cases

And now this: As Texas measles outbreak grows, newborn babies were exposed to the virus in Lubbock hospital

How terrifying for all these parents. This is why not vaccinating is selfish.

I read this a couple days ago. So sad, so unnecessary and also indicative of how hard it is to break through to certain mindsets.
