In May it won’t be dark until 9 pm or so. I think you would be fine walking as a couple. I wouldn’t walk alone at night in any city that doesn’t have lots of pedestrian traffic. Uber and Lyft will be inexpensive for the relatively short distances you would cover downtown and readily available.
