I didn’t apply to UAH but noticed the website states that the GPA is cumulative, 4.0+, so it’s not clear wether that means 4.0uw or 4.0 weighted GPA.

As I recall, they accept either.

uah is a great school known for engineering, and 10K per year for a college education is becoming a “deal”

Yes, if all you’d have to pay is $10k per year that would be a deal…but UAH isn’t offering that.

9250 tuition

6500 housing

15,750 total per year

^^Even if you have the 4.0 GPA and you have the 34+ ACT to get the above, the cost for tuition, room board, fees, and books are over $31k…so you’d still have to pay at least $15k per year (plus personal expenses and travel)…And, these scholarships do not increase as all these costs costs increase…which they will each year.

Frankly, with an ACT 34 and a 4.0+ GPA, a better or equal deal could likely be had at a better school. Yes, UAH has a good engineering program, but the College of Engineering isn’t even ranked in the top 100. So, although it’s good, likely a student with such stats could get a better deal elsewhere.

*

They may accept either one…whichever one is higher and/or on the transcript. However, some schools don’t weight, and a student from such a school that has a 3.9 GPA shouldn’t miss out if his ACT is a 34+. The test score is far more valuable than that tiny insignificant difference of GPA.

dodgersmom, alabama schools will take whatever is on your transcript…weighted or unweighted …they dont recalculate

^^^ That’s what I was trying to say. Thanks for clarifying!

UGH … Have to reevaluate now. D was already accepted and really likes the programs at UAH. But to wait until now is RIDICULOUS!! she didn’t apply to her in-state safety because she qualified for a full ride at UAH. #frustrated

^^^

It’s for this reason, I think those who did apply should complain to UAH. To change at this late of a date, after some acceptances, caused some to not apply elsewhere.

I think UAH should honor the scholarships for those who were accepted before the change since there was a logical assumption that the scholarship would be awarded. If UAH was considering a change, they should have taken down the website.

I agree that the timing was awful, but I disagree that the solution would be to honor the prior scholarship levels for some, but not all, of this year’s applicants. That would mean that an applicant who received her letter of acceptance on Tuesday would get a full ride, but an identical applicant who didn’t receive notification until Thursday would not. That hardly seems fair.

Legally, UAH is probably under no obligation to do anything. The scholarship matrix for 2012-13 (which is still posted on the UAH website) states clearly that it is for this school year only. It also states that award levels “are subject to change.”

On the other hand, an argument could be made that UAH has been saying for six years that the scholarship levels were “subject to change,” and, during that entire time, they never changed. Perhaps, under these circumstances, UAH had an obligation to provide some additional notice that this year, the scholarship levels really were going to change. Especially if UAH had reason to believe that prospective applicants were relying on the posted scholarship matrix, notwithstanding the disclaimers, and also knew that the applicants’ reliance could result in their not submitting timely applications to other colleges.

Certainly, this year’s applicants have reason to be upset . . . and I’m starting to agree with m2ck that perhaps they should be calling UAH to complain.

The whole concept of “subject to change” has a spirit that goes along with it that any changes will occur before the app season.

I agree that it wouldn’t be fair to deny the merit to those accepted shortly after the change. Maybe I should have said that the merit should be given to those who applied before the change.

Was the deadline changed from Dec 1 to Feb? If so, then those who applying during that period should be subject to the change…not those who applied before.

In reply to dodgersmom’s original post, I think Louisiana Tech is a good alternative for some of the students who were previously looking at UAH for a full ride.

In some ways, La Tech is more attractive - it’s a traditional residential campus, Division I sports, and a small college town atmosphere.

In terms of curriculum, metrics, and rankings, the schools are similar. Most notable differences in curriculum are Aerospace Engineering (UAH offers, La Tech doesn’t) and Architecture (La Tech offers, UAH doesn’t).

La Tech is probably quite a bit less attractive than UAH in terms of engineering industry recruiting/visibility. UAH is recruited by the defense contractors and high tech industry in Huntsville, whereas La Tech is more of a regional feeder to oil/manufacture businesses in the Mississippi Delta region.

This change has really turned me off to UAH.

Even though it wasn’t a top look for my son, I thought it was a solid fit. We were trying to get him down to visit in January. I’m glad we didn’t make the travel plans yet, because this change has really left a bad taste in my mouth.

DS has decided to add another financial safety.

I’m looking for some help finding colleges to apply to this year. Not necessarily much to do with UAH (although I did apply to UA), but I have been trying to get some answers. Money is a pretty large factor; I wouldn’t like to pay more than 10-15k a year if possible while still finding a respectable school. I just got my November SATs back: CR-680 Math-800 Writing-760. Would these scores give me a good chance for scholarships and if so, where? I’m looking to major in Civil Engineering and I live in PA with about a 3.9 UW GPA.

To make things a little more interesting, I am currently taking a gap year. I applied to about 11 schools last year as a senior and didn’t end up where I wanted to be. I’m going to Germany in January to do an internship for 6 months. I got denied to 6 schools last year with SAT scores about 200 points lower and no outstanding ECs. So far this year I’ve applied to Temple, Clemson, Alabama, and Maryland. Anybody know of some places that may be able to offer me some money? Any and all opinions are appreciated.

There goes any feeling of security I had about my future! I love my life!

azk: look at uab [UAB - The University of Alabama at Birmingham](http://www.uab.edu) automatic scholarships 15k for act of 28 or above and gpa of 3.0 has engineering(accredited programs). i think technically you have missed the date of 12/1/12 however last year they extended it as funds were available. wonderful school, 11k undergrads, urban campus,
cost of attendance for oos is 25 to 28k so that should keep it in your ballpark.
easy quick app, no essays (unless you apply to an honors college, then essay and posssible interview)

azk, you will get more/better responses if you start your own thread.

I know this thread is 3 years old but I just came across this and I was wondering have they restarted the scholarship?Because on their website it is mentioned about a full ride scholarship…so… Kindly help me out. I am kinda freakin out here…
