Men’s D2 and D3 Soccer at Top Academic Colleges

But it goes the other way too. There was a featured player on QB1 (a documentary Netflix show that follows 3 quarterbacks through their senior season and college choice) where the QB wanted to go to an Ivy but couldn’t afford it because he’d get no money for football and not enough in financial aid. The show doesn’t tell you how much the parents make but one can kind of guess from the house and ‘toys’ (boats, cars the kids drive). The QB ended up at Kentucky, but I think he would have preferred Princeton academically. It just made no sense for him to be full pay when he can go to other colleges for free.

I was wondering how your players are keeping their skills up during the quarantine? We are in Europe and restricted to the house. We can’t walk or run. We aren’t even allowed to have 2 people in a car. If we walk our dog, we have to take the dog’s passport and our ID and show it is our dog (because people are borrowing pets so they can get out) and we are within sight of our house.

We don’t have those restrictions so S is able to go for runs and play in the front yard. What country are you in? The best thing I’d recommend is juggle, which can be done in the house.

@eb23282 That’s great for your S. We are in Spain.

I am starting to wonder/worry that if college doesn’t start in the Fall will the D3 coach/University still want S20 on the soccer teams since D3 coaches and players don’t sign a commitment? Several scenarios are playing out in my head…1. School starts in the Fall and everything is fine. 2. The school doesn’t start in the Fall but does start in the Spring…probably everything is fine. 3. School starts in the Fall but because we live in Europe (but are American) S20 can’t make it to the university and misses the main season. 4. Because of the whole situation we are required to take a gap year, and then S20 arrives with next year’s class. Since S20 is trying to pick a college before May, I worry if we should consider the coach deciding to change their offer… I don’t want to reach out to the coach because honestly there is no way to know what things will be in the Fall. But, I am curious if players have ever taken a gap year and how D3 coaches respond. A gap year is not what S20 wants but trying to gather as much info before S20 makes a decision on which college to attend.

Wouldn’t you have to ask each coach what they would do, or what their thoughts are with regard to your son being on the team if he couldn’t participate in the fall season? Posters on CC can’t possibly know, and I have to believe there is no one answer across the board for every school. It is a reasonable question given your circumstances, I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out.

Has your son been offered a spot on multiple teams?

@cinnamon1212 thank you. No, there is just 1 team right now. I think it is too difficult to know exactly what will happen. I think everyone is trying to figure it out and it is an unprecedented situation it’s difficult to predict. But, I was curious if anyone had taken a gap year because I thought there might insight gained…he certainly doesn’t want to take one though.

Agree with cinnamon you have to speak with the coach and school…and they might not have answers about much yet. Do you even know if they would grant a gap year?
I agree that your situation is more complicated living internationally, but I see no downside to chatting with both the coach and admissions.

@Mwfan1921 thank you. I do not know if they would grant a gap year, I don’t think he would ask for one. But, I was wondering what happens if you can not get to campus due to travel restrictions. But, if classes are in session but he can’t be there, I don’t think it would work for “online learning”. I can’t imagine, or hope, they wouldn’t ask him to forfeit his admission. I am thinking it would be a forced gap year. Thanks for your insight. You have given us the confidence to reach out to admissions and the coach even if they likely won’t have answers yet either.

I guess I am also wondering for everyone who is planning on joining a team this Fall, has there been any communication between players and coaches about what will happen in the Fall if schools do not resume on campus?

I am sure the school’s administrators are working thru contingency plans for international students. There is no way they would renege on admissions for any students!

There are so many possibilities with the fall, hopefully things become more clear over the next 8 weeks or so.

Good luck.

I realize your post is a few months old, but just want to warn you that a huge percentage of NESCAC athletes are not receiving any financial aid. They are generous schools but their campuses are polarized economically. They need the full pay kids to help pay for the “no loan/generous financial aid packages” that allow many kids to attend for free.

I know many current athletes and not one applied as they would not qualify based on family finances (affluent but by no means wealthy) and knew it would risk a roster spot. My opinion will not be popular as no one wants to think they are “buying” their kid a place on a team, but less that half the kids at all NESCACS even applied for aid. This is all published information–available on the Common Data Set and Collegeboard.com Under “Paying” Just sending a word to the wise :))

I agree very much with the above assessment. My daughter got $20,000+ Merit aid a year at schools where her scores (ACT) were north of 75%, she was geographically desirable, and the school (while very good) was lesser known. The schools where she was not geographically desirable and were well known did not offer aid, but in most cases she received a note from department head of her intended major with compliments and expressing a desire for her to attend.

Interesting, I didn’t realize any NESCACs would have merit dollars. Any idea about Hamilton or Union?

No merit at Hamilton, yes merit at Union…not sure how high it gets, maybe 1/2 tuition?

I’m afraid I don’t. However just based on selectivity, I would guess there would be more of a chance at merit aid at Union. But that’s speculation on my part.

What does this mean?

If a kid gets into a D1 or D2 school that meets need, and gets a partial athletic scholarship, they can’t make up the difference between what the athletic scholarship would cover and what the NPC might say?

There have been recent changes to this. I believe in equivalency sports, athletic aid can now stack with merit or need based aid without the non-athletic aid counting against scholarship limits. Others can correct me if that’s not accurate.

This is not the case anymore, as of last summer. DI schools can stack merit aid and need based aid (basically means they do not count against team limits/athletic dept budgets). DI Council takes legislative and waiver action - NCAA.org

Council members also adopted legislation that would exempt from counting against team limits need-based financial aid given by the school that meets other specific criteria and other school-given, merit-based awards with no relationship to athletics ability. The rule is effective Aug. 1, 2020.
