I disagree with both of these things. S got both types of pants, and looks great in both. He’s about the same size as Mom60’s kid: a couple inches under 6 feet, 33 in waist, slender not skinny.

I would be very wary of planning to wear a suit jacket with slacks. It almost always looks lame.

I remember that the slacks he got were lightweight 3-season wool in charcoal, black, navy, and a mid-tan. (He already had a good pair of khakis.) the jackets were a grey windowpane (Edward Aboud, I think) and a brown/olivish Calvin Klein. There might have been a darker herringbone. He already had the navy blazer. He augmented his existing dress shirts (both Brooks, one white one blue) with a couple more in white, ecru, and a gray for stylin’. He also got a couple of new silk ties, and a pair of black and a pair of brown shoes. I think it was a total of 2 or 3 jackets, 4 slacks, 5 shirts, 2 ties, and 2 pairs of shoes, and at least one new belt and some socks for $1K.

I think that having them matched looks better.

That said, we often have interviewers come in with the saddest excuses for suits imaginable. That’s okay though - we’re after their brains. They just have to show that they can wear a suit for the one-in-a-million odds that they might have to actually use it at work.

I have bought my H suits from Men’s Wearhouse in the past. They will sell you the suit and then they will show you several shirts & ties all laid out to match the suit…you can buy a shirt & tie from them, or you can do what I did, which was to buy the suits from them and then buy the shirts & ties elsewhere for less money. Sometimes when Macy’s has good coupon sales, I can find beautiful ties for under $10! You won’t find that at the Men’s Wearhouse.

However the salespeople at Men’s Wearhouse are good at what they do and they are very convincing of why you should buy the shirt & tie from them! Resisiting the urge to purchase from them and going elsewhere could save you quite a bit of $$! :)

Or, if you actually need a complete wardrobe NOW and have limited time to shop and limited tolerance for shopping, you can just go ahead and buy almost everything from them. And do so at an excellent price, especially if they are running a good sale. And get excellent advice about dressing for the adult workplace that your S will actually take heed of. :)

You raise a good point, but I like to find bargains. I’ve only been to Men’s Wearhouse maybe two or three times and I don’t remember seeing ties there for less than $65 or $55!

You can get the same excellent advice for putting together an outfit from Macy’s, where I find the shirts & ties much more reasonable.

However, you are right if you don’t feel like shopping around, it’s definitely a one-stop shopping store for all types of men’s clothing. Like a convenience store, where you pay a bit more for the convenience.

Thanks everyone. I am not sure if he went shopping yesterday or not. He had applied to an internship position and he found out Monday night he was a finalist and has to complete 4 different projects for them by tonight for consideration. Plus he had a paper due for his summer school class. He is 6 hours away from home so I am counting on his GF to help him out. He only has so much money in his checking account and no credit card so he will not be able to overspend.
