<p>Well, i may be wrong, but i think this issue depends on the kind of society and environment people live in.</p>
<p>My ring finger is much shorter than my index finger, so my testosterone level must be low. However, I am a total map whiz (and geek). I study maps in my spare time and can replicate maps from memory. I have a computer-like ability to rotate objects in my mind so as to “see” them from different angles. I am probably in the top 0.01% of the population for visual/spatial abilities. Right, so much for the testosterone thing. There may be some correlation, but I would look more toward genes. The ability to do this likely runs in families, regardless of gender.</p>
<p>The hypothesis has been tested through a neuro-imaging technique called diffusion tensor imaging. The difference was found between men and women, not boys and girls. I think the researchers have the final say here.</p>

<p>Instead of the personal anecdotes (I am a woman and I am as good with maps as any darn man), does anyone want to propose a scientifically-based rationale why men and women should, in the absence of culturally based indoctrination, be essentially the same in mean and range of all components of brain function?</p>
<p>There is vast experimental evidence that men and women differ, supported by reasonable hypotheses about the effect of the chemical environment of the brain during development, etc.</p>
<p>Against that, we don’t LIKE that there should be differences, so we declare against all evidence that there are no differences?</p>
<p>To paraphrase Mr Rogers, some of us are fancy on the inside & some are fancy on the outside.</p>
<p>Everyone arguing that men and women have differently wired brains seem to assume, in their arguments, that there is one man in the world and one woman in the world and their brains are different.</p>
<p>There are billions of men in the world and billions of women. You can’t make broad generalizations like “men and good at x and women are good at x” because you cannot ‘average’ brains- everyone’s brain is different, regardless of gender.</p>

Having raised two boys I can also say that it’s not all about gender. It doesn’t surprise me that adult male and female brains are different - it’s interesting that this shows up with adolescence implying hormones may be the biggest factor. </p>
<p>For what it’s worth I’m a map person - I hate being given direction landmarks. I have a much, much better sense of direction than dh and I always know where north is.</p>

<p>Sure you can. There are many things about the structure and function of brains that can be averaged: size, weight, IQ, SAT math scores, etc., etc. The list goes on and on. </p>

<p>Well, I am female and I read the map when my husband and I went on our honeymoon. He had to take over the map when we found out we were 60 miles off course.</p>
<p>It’s already been said that there is a broad distribution range of traits among women alone and among men alone. But the distribution curves do not overlap entirely.</p>
<p>There is a lot of variation within each gender, but the distribution isn’t even. @Migraine—>The study showed that a higher percentage of men did better than women on map-reading, and a higher percentage of women did better than men on remembering conversations. Broad generalizations can be made about two groups, but the generalization implies nothing about individual abilities. It just shows that on average one group does better than another on a particular task.</p>
