Met Gala 2017

I loved Zendaya’s look. Fabulous! Also love Lily-Rose Depp. (I think that’s her name.) Lots of beautiful. classic dresses, lots of weird getups, some of which work and some of which don’t. I believe that the theme was supposed to be Avant Garde, as well as an homage to Commes des Garcons? I think Jennifer Lopez’ dress was a dowdy total yawn. IMHO LaPerla “couture” looks like something one would wear in a bordello. The Jenner girl was wearing a negligee, not a dress.

I really do not get the current trend for androgynous boy’s pants that look like they shrank in the wash, and were too short to begin with. And I use the term “boy” advisedly. SOME young guys wear very slim pants well and avoid looking like they are something they grew out of. Thank you, Ermenegildo Zegna. Tom Ford has a lot to answer for.

DVF on her gowns:

@JHS i didn’t see anyone wearing the red dress from the article. Pharrell’s wife wore a different one–made with no arm holes!–that fits your description of a snowsuit for an alien baby, lol. It is basically a big shape that reveals nothing about the body within.

My favorites were Kiko Mizuhara in Margiela and Karlie Kloss in the Herrera black mini dress with white cuffs. Maybe both were a little casual for the gala but they looked very elegant and they were clothes we could actually wear. I also liked Elle Fanning in the Miu Miu pale blue gown. Color was similar to Jennifer Lopez’s dress but less “prom like” and it suited her - kind of an ethereal look.

I don’t think Chanel or Dior came off well on Kirke or Hartzel and to be honest they looked downright awful. Maybe it was the make-up but I would have expected more from designers of that magnitude. Wondering how much input they actually have in the final look or if any at all? Do their personal stylists put them together in the end?

Madonna looked kind of yesterday in that camouflage get up and those “grills” on her teeth.

There were a lot of lovely Chanel and Dior dresses, I thought. I also liked Kiko Mizuhara and Fanning, and a number of the Caroline Herrera’s. I think that Jemima Kirke’s bizarre red eye makup may have been according to the theme, but did her overall look no favors. I detest Madonna, and she lived down to my expectations. That Ralph Lauren trenchcoat dress was a total fail. I don’t remember who wore it.

I, too, had no idea who at least half of these people were.

Madonna looks great for a woman who is approaching 60 but it’s a shame she won’t go for a more elegant look. It’s like she refuses to evolve and clings to what made her famous in her 20’s. She just doesn’t wear that look well anymore – she has the face and body to carry off some really great fashion but chooses not to I guess.

from https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/28/t-magazine/fashion/rei-kawakubo-comme-des-garcons-themes.html No surprise here. She’s clearly doing art not fashion. To me clothes are more interesting if you can actually function in them.

@Consolation – The red dress Pharrell Williams’ wife, Helen Lasichanh, was wearing is the same as the red dress in the NYT Magazine article. It has arms, but no place for the hands to exit.

@JHS Clearly, you’re right. I must have looked at the wrong article in the Times. The one I read had a different red dress. Equally unflattering, even to a model, I might add.

Any opinions on this story? Seems like pretty trashy teen behavior for adults. I know how strict museums are about air quality and climate control:

Ewww… Smoking is disgusting. Smoking in a museum is beyond disgusting! Don’t these people have any brains?! Wait. They are “celebrities.” They don’t need brains. Just some other body parts.

/Pardon my rant. I am so disgusted.

Ewww, it’s very hard and expensive to remediate after people smoke and get all the residue from smoke everywhere. That’s horribly selfish and irresponsible. They should be fined, like everyone else!

Just as gross is the shot of them sitting on that bathroom floor in their gowns. Yuck.

How nasty! I’m sure the designers are going to appreciate getting gowns returned to them after they were on the bathroom floor. I had to laugh at the article as they called these people “A” list celebrities.

It looked to me as if Catherine Deneuve was there to use the facilities, and was mightily annoyed. Recalls have to run the gauntlet of disgusting smokers in the girls room in HS.

I’m not too concerned about dresses that can be replaced, unlike the artwork in the museum.
