Thanks to this thread I am finally thinking about myself for a change. I have been having milk every morning, almonds and walnuts, and today I ordered a steamer from Macy’s. I have poor flexibility and am researching DVD’s which teach yoga to inflexible people. For some time I have stopped having any caffeine, stopped buying sugar, and am limiting salt. I only drink water with lemon. I used to do cardio and weights and am slowly going to build my strength back up. Sure beats having to see a doctor or take medication for aches and pains. I think if I slowly incorporate more healthy habits it will become a way of living for me.
Go get it, Raclut!!!
The worst thing is trying on clothes at the store and not being able to buy the size I would like to fit in. I think I am at a point where I am tired of carrying this extra weight and would like to buy some nice dresses that fit me well. It would be nice to go shopping and have the freedom to purchase anything that I like because it looks good and fits well.
Most important for me is to feel energetic and not tired. I also ordered a deep sleep sound spa which I hope will help me sleep through the night. For the longest time I have had trouble falling asleep due to feeling warm at night.
I’m not trying to loose weight this week because I know stress will hold on to pound. I lose weight on weekend but not weekday.
raclut - After a very long surgery recovery and a ton of muscle loss, I tried 3 things that helped me tremendously. 1) I bought the Leslie Sansone walk at home 5 Day Slim Down (A mile each morning) video. I did one or two miles (only takes 12 minutes per) a morning for 2 months and I must admit that just by simple walking in place I lowered my pant size. 2) I bought a yellow exercise strap and did some arm strengthening work and have really noticed an improvement in arm and neck strength 3) I took a free intro class to yoga to safely learn some of the basic positions and then I signed up for a gentle yoga class.
Today I signed up for a membership at Planet Fitness. $29 initiation fee, $10 a month and $29 annual fee. Seems low risk versus $100 month for the fancier gyms. I will be back on to get some tips from the peeps on this thread.
@Kajon. That is a good deal. We have a Sports and Health club but it is $120/month.
I am going to look for that walking video. I’m not well coordinated but eventually I would like to try a zumba class. It looks like fun. Found free workouts online.

Kajon, I spent quite a bit of time at our Planet Fitness. Low risk, big benefits.
Kajon, a 12 minute walking mile is racewalking fast! A fast mile for me is about 16:30. Was the program a run/walk? I wouldn’t mind adding more speed to boost the cardio since I can’t run.
walked 4 miles this AM with my dog.
Wow, that’s a long walk for pup!!! My pup has short legs and spends most of his time sniffing - 4 miles would take us hours!! Good job for both of you.
“…I did one or two miles (only takes 12 minutes per…”
Just want to point out that 12 min pace is a very brisk walk! This is 5 miles per hour, which is a running pace for some.
Four miles, FallGirl? Terrific! How long did that take?
About an hour and 15 I think. Dog is a 14.5 year old beagle so she slowed me down. ( although one of my friends swears I am keeping her alive with all of the walking).
@raclut - When I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, this is exactly what my doctor told me. He said, “This is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. We’ll make small changes one at a time, and each small change is going to be a permanent part of your life from now on.” So, for example, making sure I have a couple of servings of yogurt and/or cottage cheese every single day was at first something I had to remember to do, and now it’s just second nature.
ETA – 70 minutes with the weights last night. And I kept a clean diet all day. ![]()
Kajon mentioned upthread using an exercise strap. I was feeling guilty about spending time on CC instead of exercising and now I get to at least do upper arm work while reading! Best of both worlds.
Yesterday, I was stressed, didn’t have an appetite, so I snacked for dinner. Went to bed late and stomach was tumbling, had a banana to calm down my stomach. This morning I lost more pounds. I’m now convinced eating less is the key to lose weight, not exercise more. Down 2 lbs from when I started, now is waiting to knock out the last 3. Weekend is coming and I tend to loose weight on the weekend.
But I did have some acid in my stomach, which I don’t think it’s good.
But Dr. Google, as soon as your appetite is back and you start eating “regularly” again, the weight will come back. The only way to get weight loss to be long lasting is to make change your “regular” eating habits “regularly” - as in, a lifestyle change for good!
I hear you. We should exercise for muscle tone and such. But I lost 10 lbs this year when I was sick and has not gained back any. I did gain some back on vacation and that’s what I just lost this week. But I had a big breakfast everyday, lots of food and desserts, so that’s unlikely I will eat like that when I’m NOT on vacation.
Countingdown/Bunsen - I just looked at the back of the video and it says 14 minutes. My bad! The walking video is all about walking in place, knee lifts and side steps…maybe she uses a different calculation because of the leg movements. Whatever it is…that particular video works for this lazy old lady.
I have been known to do some of the same moves, Kajon, to get up to my 10,000 steps…
Anything that gets us moving is a good thing!
