Middle age weight gain?

I am taking a multi now. Just a generic. Getting ready for an operation and I want to make sure I am not shorting my body in any way nutritionally. Iron is my biggest concern since my husband doesn’t eat beef and we mostly eat at home.

@abasket, I’ve cut out almost all dairy and most bread. Like lizardly, I don’t eat beef.

@lilmom, I don’t think people with pictures of donuts should be posting on this thread

Lizardly, did you ask your surgeon if it is OK for you to add a new supplement prior to the surgery!!! Yikes. Supplements should always be disclosed on the form that asks for “which medications you are taking.” Just because something is a vitamin, it does not mean it is not going to affect your body in a negative way. Vitamin E, IIRC, has been implicated in higher risk of hemorrhaging. Not something I would want to experiment with before a scheduled operation!

Good Morning everyone.
I had an interesting weekend . Went to my usual Sat AM yoga class, but did not do any other fitness activity. I have been walking 2-4 miles in the AM and going on longer walks on Sunday. I got lazy yesterday and skipped that. By last evening I just did not feel right. I didn’t feel sick or anything just a little sluggish and realized that my body missed its walk. This is totally new for me.

Good habits are worth their weight in gold! (so to speak!)

Very interesting FallGirl. How many months have you been on this new routine? It’s really paying off!

Fallgirl, we got a new puppy a few years ago and he went through a pretty crazy phase, extremely high energy, I was doing 2-4 big walks a day, it did not take long to retrain my lizard brain, if I don’t get MY walk, I get pretty cranky!

I started the new routine in June I think. It’s paying off with weight loss and just how I feel in general.

How’s everyone doing? I hope this thread doesn’t fade away… I think it resonates with many of us “Parent Cafe” peeps.

Having called “goal” on weight a few weeks back, I’m working on fitness now – especially strength. I’m focusing on upper body and core. A happy side-effect is seeing less flabbiness in problem areas. Also had my annual physical last week and all the tests came back solidly in the middle of “normal reference.”

@FallGirl Feeling better than I have for years is the biggest motivator to me!

Thanks for bumping up!

I was doing fantastic until I saw the ice cream /frozen yogurt maker for $15 at Dillards.
Reese’s peanut butter ice cream along with stout floats are my new nemesis .

Still 20 pounds from my goal, but everyone is telling me to stop losing I look fine. I have gone down three sizes. The new clothes were costly, however, a great incentive too.

My flabbiness area is in my arms. I am using the kettlebell and it has the side effect of tightening my core too.

I’m just back from vacation, and I’m going to try to be extra good eating this week. I bought kale salad to eat for lunch most every day (I actually like it, so I think I really will), and I bought salad for dinner every night (will eat more than just salad at dinner), plus lots of fruit. I AM NOT dieting (when I think I’m dieting, all I can think about is food), but am going to try to eat well. We did have an active vacation (including riding our bikes 42 miles one day), but the wine consumption was pretty high too. I just don’t want to go into the holidays feeling like I need to watch my weight, so I will get it under control now.

I made myself a promise when I started planning to lose weight: I wouldn’t eat anything I wasn’t completely enjoying. I really enjoy how I feel when I weigh less, and that can mean I don’t enjoy junk food or too much food. For example: the first small cookie is wonderful–but the second one? I don’t enjoy as much, so that means I don’t eat it . That’s a big difference (for me, anyway) from going on a diet… I can plan to really enjoy my food for the rest of my life much more easily than I can plan to deprive myself!

Have to share this!

Woman starts running at age 62:

A good read for anyone who is doubting what they can do in terms of exercise and to me, most significantly is the visual - how different and physically BETTER this woman looks after making an exercise commitment.

(and look at her clothes! what a difference - you see CONFIDENCE in that woman to wear what makes her feel good on her runs - yeah for her!!!)

Three cheers for Becky!!! @abasket - thanks so much for sharing her story

The last 8 days have been tough. This is the busiest week of the year at work and putting in 12 and 13 hour days left no time for walking or yoga. And while I ate healthy for the most part, I had some stumbles.
Now the busy time is over so it is time to get back on track.

You’ll do it FallGirl. You know that the success feels better than the “stumbling”! MUCH BETTER to be on track and not work so many hours, right?!

Went to yoga this AM, not my best day for poses, but felt good to be beck on the mat. Planning a long (several mile) walk in tomorrow’s beautiful weather.

Today is my 59th birthday.
NOT feeling sad or down at all about getting older. I’ve been making small and persistent changes that are yielding some results toward better health. Been stalking and learning here, practicing “mindful eating” to combat my binge tendencies and adding in (some) exercise.

My clothes fit better, I like not feeling overfilled. I’m down 12 lbs over last two months…trying not to focus too much on those numbers as I’ve been here before and have a long way to go.
Dr. gave me a 6 month reprieve (4 more to go now) before she will insist on meds for pre-diabetes…
My A1c is “Only” 5.7 so I’m hoping I can beat it back with lifestyle changes.
Wish me luck!

Way to go musicmom! Sounds like you are on the right track & having significant success already!
