"Middle of the Road" LACs

I’ll second Davidson, which seems evenly split between starving-artist hippies and trust fund babies from the Northeast/Florida.

Do keep in mind the difference between Davidson as post #21 describes it (I don’t know whether it’s true or not, mind) and a school where “politically moderate” is a majority (Centre, for instance, is true to its name). Being split between two extremes, like Hamilton, can be middle of the road; but that middle feels very different than a statistically equivalent middle composed of people standing in the middle rather than people being pushed into each other.

keilex, can you tell us a little more about Hamilton?

thanks

Disclaimer: this is purely hearsay. Hamilton has a “light” side and “dark” side of campus; stereotypically, light = preppy and dark = artsy.

i’ll suggest all colleges have a ‘light’ side and a ‘dark’ side. don’t go by hearsay, keep an open mind, and visit any school you’re interested in. the grads i know from Hamilton (2) fit neither side, IMHO, and their talk of the school suggests the majority is quite ‘middle.’

if you want to know more about Hamilton, or any school, ask those who attend or graduated, and always remember to take their feedback with a grain of salt;-) feed your intuition with experience, not someone else’s point of view.

^Most colleges do not have physical light and dark sides of campus the way Hamilton does due to having absorbed a women’s college (whose name escapes me). The distinction MIGHT encourage similar divisions of the student body, and by hearsay many students “joke” about light vs. dark.

Keilex, ha!

the dark side of Hamilton refers to the other side of campus that was added during the last few decades and was formerly a girls college. It has newer buildings, especially compared to Hamilton’s older campus buildings.

^Exactly. But I’ve also heard students say that the physical juxtaposition mirrors the student body to a certain extent.

Keilex, yes, I have heard that also

Why would you think that? Grinnell’s extremely liberal, for being in the middle of nowhere. Macalester’s pretty liberal. So is Carleton.
