There have been some fairly recent research studies linking an increased risk of stroke for women who have migraines with auras who are on birth control pills. I know several women who were immediately taken off of them when the study came out.

^My kid was taken off estrogen pills when she experienced migraines with auras first time. She was given progesterone pills and they suggested implants or iud. Any thoughts on implants?

I didnt find that to be the case with me, but I am 5"2’. Maybe a taller person would need to take 3-4 pills to get the 600-800mg Rx level (I find it funny that they call that Rx level when anyone can just take 3-4 pills (200mg each) to get that level. I know, the Rx levels come in single pills.

Heard back from neurologist. D migraines are not with aura. He is fine with her taking a low dose combination BC pill. D will make an appointment with a GYN in college town to discuss all her options.
Igloo my D’s good friend had an implant. She just had it removed as she wasn’t happy with the weight gain and some other side effects.

22 Yup, height/weight would be a factor in dosage, one would think. I was looking to reduce ibuprofen though because I had developed anemia from heavy bleeding. I probably would have stuck with ibuprofen except for that (pycnogenol being more expensive).

mom60, I’m not saying an implant is the right choice for your D but I hope she doesn’t let one person’s reaction turn her off. I’m currently working on a project with many young women who received an implant or iud and so far not a single woman has wanted her implant removed. I’ve had my implant for two years and I love it. :)

I think it is a judgment call mom60. My D’s vascular migraine was not accompanied by aura, and she has no history of migraine. The internal medicine doc told her she could stay on the mini combination pill and prescribed her migraine med to use as needed. She hasn’t had another migraine. The ob/gyn however said that given the vascular symptoms she would prefer to remove the estrogen. It was scary…D called me while she was having the vascular migraine - she was confused, mixing up her words, and said she had been reading and the words were moving around the page. Not something to take a chance on again. YMMV.

Snowdog and romanigypsyeyes- I do appreciate your sharing. That is why I want her to see a ob/GYN and explore all her options. I have received a recommendation for a GYN near her college and she will make an appointment.
