Missed Sophomore semester 1 due to medical reason

theloniusmonk, appreciate your post very much. Makes me think indeed about the reco that the staff would need to provide. My DS15 had a great rapport with them all and they seemed to be supportive initially but now have all gone silent since it became apparent that his injury is no “mild” concussion, which they presume is no big deal. The school district has engaged their lawyers and every word anyone from the school or district utters, which is very meager, all comes filtered through their legal team. I have no hopes that they mean well. I did ask for a 504 and they put out a 30-minutes meeting to check eligibility, initiate, discuss with 10+ attendees on symptoms, come up with accommodations and to sign off…all in one sitting, which sounds very odd to me although I have no experience with this type of thing. I asked for IEP and pointed to the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) eligibility criteria, which includes Traumatic Brain Injury. Yet the director Special Ed said that they would need to go through the battery of evaluations and results process which would be a 90day process and in the end my DS15 may not qualify as he is also a qualified GATE student. I have requested to start that process still.

RealisticRealist, thanks for sharing your story, it gives me hope for my son. Will check out homeschool option although I’m not so sure about it. May be will go with Charter school independent study program which runs more or less like homeschool with the school managing the bells and whistles of the formalities. But they are severely short of higher level subjects, which then need to be completed at local community college or via the extremely limited options to enroll concurrently in AP classes at resident public school. It does not look like a great solution, but under the circumstances, nothing looks like a good solution.

I am thinking seriously to get my son out of here to a different country that is supportive of children suffering due to medical reasons.
