Mistake in interview

tokyo: Actually, no he’s NOT a squash enthusiast. He wrote that he told the interviewer, “When I go to Peddie, I’d like to try new sports like squash…” There are presumably other new sports, like squash, that Peddie has to offer.

His point is that squash is a sport he doesn’t play…one that would be new to him. I doubt he’s going to be held responsible for knowing about sports he hasn’t played before. It’s the opposite of a squash enthusiast failing to realize that Peddie doesn’t have squash.

I’d be very surprised if his willingness to try out new sports, like squash, will be held against him because Peddie doesn’t have squash.

Tokyo: I’m applying to Concord, Loomis Chaffee, Hill, Peddie. And yes, I DID apply to Mercersburg, but I definitely gave a bad impression on their adcoms and there are certain requirements which I wasn’t aware of. I phoned them several times to find out whether or not they have missing things in my application. I couldn’t schedule my interview due to incompletion of my application or something. And when I phoned them this morning to ask about my TOEFL exemption, they refused, so I was like… “Okay, then I’ll take TOEFL…but…”. Then the adcom who already knew me over several phone calls said, “Look Brian, We have 72 other Korean students applying to our school this year. We need to distinguish qualified applicants out of countless applications. TOEFL is something we need in order to consider you as an applicant.” Yes. I did not take TOEFL. But I got exempted from all the other schools… But I don’t know why LOL I do admire their programs and campus, but now I don’t really know… I admit that applying to Mercersburg was a last-minute choice. I initially intended to apply to Blair Academy as my safety, but after going over my choices, I decided to drop safety and take my chances. I have absolutely no time to study and take the exam, although only thing I need to study is grammar. I tutor six different kids in English and Piano about an hour a day, twice every week, plus I also need to concentrate on my school course load this semester. I’m sure Mercersburg is a fabulous school, but I’m not sure if I can write TOEFL like… tomorrow. I don’t even know what this exam is and what things are on it. Is it something that I can just walk in and write it, then get good marks? I need to make my decision as soon as possible. I haven’t signed up for it yet, but I don’t want to write an entirely different exam just to apply to one school where I’ll definitely have low chance of getting admitted. Should I just let it go?

D’yer Maker: Yes, I’ve never played squash in my life, and it’s something I realyl wanted to try since last year. It is very difficult and time-consuming to find a decent squash facility or a great squash teacher who are willing to teach beginners. All I could find was tennis instructors. Guess not many people in Vancouver are interested in squash…ay…I DID mention that since our school offered sports to people who were EXTREMELY WELL QUALIFIED as athlete who will probably go into athletics or sports later in their lives (we have MVP hockey player from Youth Hockey Team Canada, and lots of athletes got recuited with full scholarships to play sports in US universities. Oh, and our athletics have several #1 provincial teams) , this opportunity would be a chance to develope my athletic skills. Although Peddie is my second choice, I have great interest in their unique ECs program, where you are able to incorporate music, athletics, and theatre program at the same time.

Sangzog - I apologize for not reading your original post correctly. I don’t know much about the TOEFL, but I believe you can take the test online. Since you do tutor English already, I don’t believe the test will be any trouble, as long as you just read the information on the test’s website http://www.ets.org/toefl/</a> .

I know my roommate from boarding school, an international student, took the TOEFL online when he was applying to colleges. ETS just sent the scores to all of the schools that he needed to see the results. I guess it may work the same way with boarding schools.

Check out the website, and go to the details for your region under “Learners and Test Takers”.

I hope this helps.
