MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

If faxing is the preferred method for all materials, then can I send my evaluation forms via fax also?

yes you can, mungo.

and sandro, either number will work, but we prefer 9184.

Hi MITChris,

I have two questions. First, our school offers no AP courses, but I took two AP tests anyways. Can I list the scores under the section that states to list the AP course and corresponding score?

Secondly, I know that MIT only requires a science and math subject test. Would sending in a history subject test (as well) be potentially helpful to my application?

@moonshine - Yes, you can list your AP scores. And yes, you can send in a history SAT II in addition to the required ones. MIT Admissions will place the most weight on required materials, of course, but it certainly won’t hurt :)

Hey MITChriss;
I’ve been looking about this for a long time…
Can u plz tell me:
I am an Indian Student
I’ve qualified 12th as per Indian Standard of education.
I’ve also qualified DOEACC O Level & DOEACC A Level…
WES states DOEACC A Level equivalent to 1 year undergraduate in US but this is as in 1999.
I don’t know whether the standard is changed or not.
But DOEACC A Level has recently been made equivalent to graduation in India.
So what shall i opt for admission in MIT… Plz help me with all this… I am really crazy to get into MIT to gain the practical knowledge…

I am an international student and I am completely new to this system.
I found this on the MIT website [MIT Admissions | Blog Entry: “Early Action: Admitted”](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/the_selection_process_application_reading_committee_and_decisions/early_action_admitted.shtml)
It says “Congratulations and welcome to the class of 2015!” This is the year of 2010, does it mean that i have to apply for MIT 5 years in advance? And does it mean that i had already missed the period that i should apply?

I am sorry that this question sounds stupid but I am completely new to this and I am so confused.

The Class of “20xx” means that you will graduate that year (hopefully), but you apply 4 years before.
The deadline for 2015 is January 1st 2011.

@Brieelym This means that the new batch admissions (those who will leave in 2015) have started… We missed the 2014 batch as it was to be done before 1 Jan 2011… Gud Luck

Hey Chris,

I got accepted into MIT EA; however, I just realized that my schedule changed from the one I reported to MIT when I submitted my application (I dropped an independent study of Statistics due to scheduling conflicts). Do I need to contact anyone from admissions noting this or is it enough to send in my mid-year report w/ the new schedule? (Also, will my admission be in jeopardy because of this?)

silverlining- I had a similar question. Chris said that it shouldn’t be much of a problem but to email admissions@mit.edu after January 3rd just to be sure.

Hello, Chris

I have sent all my documents via mail on December 20th. In the DHL Tracking page, however, it indicates that the package is currently “Scheduled for delivery as agreed”. As I am a little worried about whether the package will arrive properly at the Admissions Office, I would like to know if you guys really set any “date for delivery” as referred in the DHL Tracking page.

Thank you so far and Merry Christmas!

Sandro Rodrigues

Thanks peab2011!

it’ll be fine sandro

So this may be somewhat of a stupid question, but it is looking like at least one of my teacher recommendations is going to be late (postmarked after Jan 1). I’m doing what I can about this, but I still think it’ll be late. Who’ll MIT still accept the recommendations or are they real sticklers for deadlines?

^They’re more lenient when it comes to recommendations being sent in late because generally it’ll be the teacher’s responsibility and they know teachers have a lot on their hands. But try and get it in as soon as you can after the deadline, preferably by fax. There’s a high likelihood they’ll still accept it - but no guarantees.

Ok, yeah faxing it does seem like a good idea.

Hello MITChris,

I have a question about the music supplement. According the website, a letter of recommendation from a current teacher is required. However, I haven’t met my private teacher for several weeks, do I really have to send in a recommendation? If yes, is it okay to send it after January 1st? Thanks!

Hello,

I wanted to know if my application will be rejected if I don’t have a science/math teacher rec. I applied via QuestBridge regular and was unaware about the Evaluation A/B requirements until yesterday (i.e. too late to ask a science/math teacher). Will it be ok to have a teacher send one in by the Jan 7th or something? Will MIT give a few days or so to send in missing/not sent things? Thanks.

@doberhound -

that’s fine, just fax them in ASAP.

@rotation -

no, don’t worry about the letter. the CD/recording is more important.

@paosid -

we do require a math/sci teacher rec. you should have a teacher send one in ASAP. the 7th/8th-ish would be fine.

MITChris, did you receive my PM?
