MIT FAQ for application year 2010-2011 (with answers by MITChris)

Thanks, MITChris – the reassurance is appreciated.

Further, I wish to confirm that it is ok with MIT to FAX to you any significant matters that have arisen since the application was made that might be useful in the file. I am thinking here of new awards, etc. Is it ok that such submissions come from the student himself/herself, or does MIT prefer that these are formally provided through the school, via FAX?

fax. the answer is always fax.

And placido, you can send the updates yourself – they do not need to be sent from your school.

Please advise asap: Making a school ski team is worth including on updates?

MIT CHRIS:

I have a question which I really want answered as soon as possible. Actually, I am an international and I emailed my EC regarding the interview some time around DEC 7. I did not receive a reply till it was January 1. I tried calling him afterwards but he told me that your EC name should have changed and when I checked on around Jan 1, it really had changed. I want panicking at that time thinking I would not be able to arrange the interview with the new EC because it was already so late. Nevertheless, I emailed him but did not receive a reply till about 3 or 4 days. After that I tried to contact him by phone but to no avail … the phone number provided was not working. I just wanted to ask whether its still possible for me to have the interview? Is it too late or should I contact admissions or my previous EC?

email interview@mit.edu

If I apply as a junior, would it affect my chances of getting in if I was rejected and reapplied as a senior? Secondly, what differences are there in the application? I searched the website but couldn’t find anything. Thanks for the help! :)

@Chris about the MidYear report:

Since I submitted my application, I’ve started working as an accountant at a medical clinic, being responsible for managing a software in which I organize each doctor’s file including agendas, incomes, etc.

On the other hand, I have also written a nice and ‘different’ essay about “Why MIT” that I would like to be read by the admissions office.

Which one would MIT prefer to see on my MidYear Report?

Hey MITChris:

I understand that fax is the best option for anything, so would it be ok if I fax my high school transcript? Or should I find a way to get my school to fax it…? (I mailed it in on time, but I just got an email saying it’s missing). And would I need a cover sheet or something? Thanks.

school can fax it

@sandro

whatever you think is best.

I applied EA (deferred) and sent in my bio SAT score for the science one, but later took physics because bio wasn’t accepted for some of my schools. got 640 on bio but a 710 on physics.

Is it too late to send physics to MIT? Would they consider my highest science score anyway?

you can send it in

Any idea on when decisions will be released yet? Is it still Pi Day?

^They won’t know until the first week of March or so. But it’s been Pi Day for the past two years so I wouldn’t discount it. But don’t count on it.

Well, seeing as they have a LOT more applications to read (I think it’s 17%, someone correct me) , I doubt it will be Pi Day…
But, here’s to hoping!

How bad is it to get a B average first term of senior year as an RD applicant? Assuming that the averages in previous years were all As.

I submitted my Midyear Report several weeks ago because my grades were available, but I just began a new job about a week ago. Should I email or fax something? Would MIT be interested in this information?

I assume it depends on the rigour of the class QSCXQQ. If it’s an Honors/ AP I’d imagine they’d understand the B. People can’t be perfect all the time, and I think they realize that.

Hey Chris, I emailed the admissions office about my TOEFL score report. And they said that they still haven’t received the score report. I gave January 8 TOEFL and my TOEFL account shows that the report was processed on January 18. I’m really freaking about this. I do not have the official score report with me. I don’t know what to do. Should I resend my scores?

Just wondering, if english is my second language, and not spoken at home, but I didn’t take the the toefl, will a 670 verbal not look so bad? I got 800 on writing though…
