MIT FAQ for application year 2014-2015

I read at here

and in this MIT student’s book, that she received a “full scholarship” from MIT.
I thought MIT only give need-based scholarships, not merit-based scholarships?
Obviously she didn’t receive a full scholarship based on need-based, cause her dad is an architect and mom is a college professor.

In her book, she said she scanned 400+ of the awards that she received in her lifetime and mail it to MIT when she was applying.
Where can I do this? In the arts supplement?

Thank you.

MIT does only give need-based aid, and any merit-based aid that a student receives is wholly from outside scholarships.

You can send awards as supplemental material, but this isn’t encouraged – there’s no need to send proof of the awards. Just listing them (perhaps in the “anything else you’d like to tell us” section) is completely sufficient.

Quick question - in the section where we self-report test scores, if I report a current ACT score, and I take it in October and get a higher score, will MIT evaluate the higher score even though I didn’t self-report it? I’m applying EA, so I won’t be able to edit the section where I self-reported scores.

Yes, they will use the highest score that is on an official score report, regardless of what you self-report.

I submitted my app with the right testing scores but switched the dates for the tests! (I put May 2013/May2014 for the wrong AP tests, they should be switched.) Should I report this to MIT?

Quick question about interviews - My interviewer only put their cell phone number on their information. are their certain times I should avoid calling? I feel like calling now (dinner time on Sunday evening) might be a bad idea…

You can contact them to correct it if you want, but this doesn’t seem like a big deal – I wouldn’t worry about it, to be honest.

You’re very thoughtful, but I think it’s okay to call any time (well, maybe not 3 AM!). If your interviewer doesn’t want to answer the phone at a given time, he or she can just let it go to voicemail.

Hi there,
EA applicant here. I was planning to send a music supplement via Slideroom, but I might not be able to get it recorded before the EA deadline due to illness. If I find out in December that I’ve been deferred, can I still send in the supplement between then and the RD deadline? Will MIT take this new part of my application into account?
Thank you!

Hi Mollie, and thank you. My question is this: I am pretty sure I want to apply EA and am ready to submit that, but I am also traveling and have a couple of other huge commitments (sports finals and big research project due) on almost the same day as the EA deadline of 11/1. I want my application to be as strong as possible but I’m worried I will have too much happening at once. I will have my test scores, transcripts and recs already submitted by the EA deadline. So can I go ahead and submit Part 1 now, indicating EA, schedule and have my interview, and then if I were to decide in late October that I really must switch to RA, can I do that? If so, is the change from EA to RA automatic or do I need to do something? Thank you!

Ahhh… Interviewers who only provide cellphones. Idiots. And I say that as a regional chair of the Educational Council. Look these folks are volunteers, who provide their time to interview. So for most of us, work hours aren’t great, Late nights or early mornings aren’t great. Early evenings after work are usually OK, as are after dinner slots, or lunchtimes. Any EC who only provides a phone number is used to being called by random applicants.

You can switch. It is not automatic, you’d just have to email the office.

My assigned interviewer hasn’t emailed me back. What should I do?

@bsalum - How long has it been?

Friday…but I just realized it is a holiday weekend. I’ll wait until tomorrow afternoon to email again?

I’d wait a full week.

I’m confused about what to do if my recommendations aren’t being sent through the online application. My guidance counselor and one of my teachers is submitting their forms through Naviance. Will my guidance counselor know to submit a Secondary School Report? Also, if they’ve already submit it for EA, do I have to link them to my mit-recs account, or will it automatically be connected through the Naviance system? My other recommender mails his letters. Does MIT accept this? Do I need to include any documents other than the recommendation letter in the envelope?

Hi Mollie. I have a question about mailing documents to MIT. It said in Part 1 that because I’m a Permanent Resident, I should mail a copy of my Green Card to MIT. So, do I do that with a Supplemental Cover Sheet on top or do I just mail the copy alone? And is the address same as the the Undergrad Admissions Processing Center (PO Box 404)? Thank you!

Hi, my kid is applying EA and he did research with an MIT professor and also with a local prof. Should he use the MIT professor for his LOR and research portfolio? There doesn’t seem to be a way to include both.

MIT is looking for any addition to the application to add something new. Although you can add a supplementary LoR from the other prof, if that LoR simply agrees with the existing LoR, it does not really tell MIT anything supplemental to what is already in the application.

My kid has a simple question that we may just be overlooking something. For the SAT scores, they want dates and hightest scores. Do they want a list of dates that you took the test, or the dates that you got each hightest scores from? The table is set up to suggest the latter.
