ah I really want to find out now The suspense is killing me… And also because there’s no interim page online when we log in the result is going to be such a shock either way :/

No wonder MIT puts all their blogs as AMAZING/BREAKING news…it all makes sense now;)

@tronvader

I’m brainwashing myself with Mariah Carey’s “When You Believe” …
‘though hope is frail, it’s hard to kill’ lol

Hey, people! I was wondering if low income would be considered as a hook in the admissions? (Like 10,000$ income annually)

^ NO. I don’t think so

It would be to easy, then…
Income is noy considered.

Is it actually easier to get into MIT if you’re a girl? Cause I heard something about that for MIT but not for Caltech; like MIT wants an equal ratio of girls to boys but Caltech’s decision is purely meritocratic and hence the skewed boy-girl ratio.

@blackpaperbirds, I’ve heard about that too. But I don’t think that would make it easier for either gender.
@laituan, @hennebou, I’d hate to speculate, but have you heard of a guy named Anshuman Panda? He was a person with an SAT score of 1800s and SAT subject test score of 800M, 800P, 800C. He topped his state with his score on the 10th final exams, but had no ECs or whatsoever. He came from a very poor family with a monthly income of ~60$. MIT accepted him for what he did as he had very limited opportunities. Moreover, he’s an Indian and was a student of a local government school. He resided in rural West Bengal.
He has a really interesting and compelling story to tell though. Given his background, he did really well and I respect him for that. You’ll find it here: [Meet the Class of 2012 | MIT Admissions](Meet the Class of 2012 | MIT Admissions)
This story, along with many other posts on the internet, led me to believe that MIT considers the influencing circumstances of an applicant. After all he cannot be compared with other applicants who enrolled into internationally renown expensive high schools, whose annual family incomes range from 60,000$ to higher than 200,000$. I know that I cannot speculate based on such a limited sample space, but I just wanted to give this issue my thought.
I am enrolled at a school that doesn’t offer any ECs, but offers I.I.T. coaching. To be frank, I never knew about MIT or any other study abroad opportunities until my late 11th grade. Until, I became aware of these, I was preparing for I.I.T.
quiverfox, I study at Narayana and I think you might have heard about it. Although a local school that follows a State Board Syllabus, Narayana is known for its intense academic competition. Sometimes, we have to come to school and study for 9 hours (even on Saturdays and Sundays).

Ouch…thats depressing @Rd…Even my school and IIT classes made sure I knew no more than a few college names till my 12th grade start…
But you should have some passion right…

I would make it a point to work on something i loved even after a 15hr day…and guess what , IT actually payed off!!!don’t know if MIT’s gonna be interested…but frankly I don’t care…even if they aren’t . I FOLLOWED MY HEART (PS: seems cliche:))

Oh and Anushman panda…It was MIT test case and does not reflect upon any MIT selection…Check out if any other candidate ever other than him was selected like that(without much…bare and scarce)

@quiverfox, true that. I’m sailing on the same boat and yeah, I agree with the Anshuman Panda thing.
It’s just that I don’t know if MIT will be able to get into my shoes and look at things from my vantage point because I haven’t written about my school or financial situation yet. I have just talked about my significant experiences. I applied for financial aid though. They have my family’s Income Tax returns. Let’s just hope for the best. :)

In the end…thats all that u really can do…hope for the best:)…anyways, how is preps for Mains coming along??Decisions distracting …aint they??:)

Oh and did you guys notice…almost all the posters in the MIT blogs are IndiaNs…lol:D

Yes, they consider application with income in mind (that means that if you went to X prestigious university for a summer camp, they will regard it differently if your family makes 2M/year and can afford it easily than if your family makes 10$/year…). But income is not a “hook”. They won’t say “Oh, look, he is poor, let’s admit him !”.

@blackpaper : You’re right. It’s easier to get into MIT if you’re a girl (a least, an american girl, there’s no data for internationals) [MIT Office of the Provost, Institutional Research](<a href=“MIT Institutional Research”>MIT Institutional Research)
–> Girls are half as much to apply, but there is about the same amount of girls who gets accepted.

@quiver : you mean in the comments ? ^^

Yup!!Oops…sorry for that…:(

Well, yeah a lot of them are from india
They’re always saying things like “Hi, my name is [insert indian name] from [insert indian city] in India. I have a question [which is often already answered in the blog post above] : [insert question] ?”
;)

There are a lot of you Indians Taking over CC!
All the top universities have a huge group of you very inquisitive folk :P

I’m not from India, actually :p

This is so intense, I just want to know now…
And I’ll be up at 11.28pm on Thursday (UK) trying to log into the decisions page…

By this logic, it’s also easier to get into MIT if you’re ethnically Asian.

What importance does ethnicity/cultural background have? I’ve never really understood why a mundane American has a better chance of getting admitted than an Asian.

Umm…that’s a funny question…because MIT is in ‘mundane’ America!!! Actually if it weren’t this way…MIT would loose all of its “high” profile(which I don’t think they care about much anyways) and all most all the classes would be filled with Asian internationals…which would reallly suck(with me being an Indian:)). So there would be NO fun whatsoever and everyone would be into studies(Intense) almost all year round…It would almost be chocking…(However I believe that all the students…inclusive of EVERYONE) are above par…Its just that Internationals go the extra mile in academics.

Oh and Mollie…I wish it were;)
