MIT MITES @2015

Is it just me, or can you still edit essays? I’m a bit worried…

What invention did you guys write about? I feel like mine was pretty dumb. :frowning:

@Newdle‌ I think so haha. It’s a good thing we can because I fixed a few typos.

@Shenreice‌ I talked about an auto-chargeable blanket that harnesses solar energy to help the homeless I always see near my school; it sounds kinda dumb but idk

@Mathmaticious do you remember the date in which you heard back from MITES about your acceptance? Also, in what form did you recieve the news? Phone call, email, or letter?

You can no longer edit stuff :O!

I think in the past it has been around the 2nd Wednesday of April, but last year it was like the 27th! But they had some glitches that i think delayed it.

Has anyone wondered why this thread isnt blowing up like last year’s? Are less people applying? Hmm I doubt that but you never know. Any other theories?

This thread actually has the same number of pages at this time, as last year’s thread.

What did you guys write for your optional essays?

I know for a fact that there are NOT less people applying this year. There are over 2,500 students applying this year, more than have ever applied in the program’s history.

Oh, and this thread has over 11.8 K views. I think that’s a lot, considering it was started in October. This is the first thread I have ever started in College Confidential so 11,800 views is a lot to me

@ZucchiniSoup I explained the fact of why I was taking 2 AP classes online because my school does not offer them. These two classes are AP Comp Sci and AP Calc AB, btw. I also mentioned how I would be he first woman in my family to pursue a degree in engineering and mentioned that I had an internship at my local library.

While we wait for April, we can have our own little discussion here!
Everybody, comment what your hobbies are, what you want to do after high school, something about yourself, what type of music you listen to, etc.
I’ll go first:
Hobbies: I like to write computer programs. I want to learn how to code in multiple languages. I don’t really do sports :confused:
What I want to do after high school: If I don’t end up getting into MIT, I want to go to University in California either to Stanford, CalTech, or the University of California at Berkeley. (I live in Florida but it’s my dream to live in California someday)
Something about myself: I have 3 older brothers, and I am the only girl lol. I love to read(even though I don’t do it as often anymore). I love old people since I get to help with their computers and ipads and “technological devices” at my job at the library. My favorite TV show is Modern Family since I think Phil Dunphy is the greatest character ever made for a family TV comedy, in my opinion.
What makes me unique: I’M FRIGGING AWESOME (just kidding)
Favorite music: Alternative/indie/electronic dance music

For the people who asked, I wrote about a device that would give people a voice. Like for people with cerebral palsy, and even babies. A device that would read their minds and speak for them. I felt like that essay was pretty weak.
For the optional essay, I wrote about how I was lacking leadership traits and that I hope a MITES experience would help me be less shy and more open.

Hobbies: I don’t have much time for anything right now but I do like volunteering with younger children. I used to play soccer and I was a cheerleader. If I get back in shape, I hope to play soccer again next year.
What I want to do after high school: I really want to go to Princeton, that’s my dream school. If not, I want to go to a school in the Northeast. I’m originally from NJ and I love the environment up there :slight_smile: I’m also interested in UPenn, NYU, Columbia, Georgetown (though it’s not really in the northeast), and Brown. After I graduate, I want to go to UPenn or NYU’s dental school and become a pediatric dentist.
Something about myself: I have four siblings, and I am the second youngest. But, my siblings and I all live in different states. I live in NC now and I’m ready to go. I don’t really know what else to say lol. I love food and cooking. I actually wanted to be a cook for a long time.
What makes me unique: uhhhhh…I wish I knew the answer to this lol. I think I’m pretty ordinary.
Favorite music: I love all types of music minus rock and country. Country music is doable sometimes. More like 1% of the time. I mostly listen to pop music though.
Fun fact: “pop” music stands for popular music! It may sounds kind of obvious but I just learned this. I think it’s weird because you can usually identify a pop song when you hear it but pop music doesn’t necessarily have a “sound”…it’s just whatever is high on the charts.

Question for people who previously went to MITES: how is class placement determined? Do they base it off of your grades? For example, how do they know if you belong in Calculus I or Calculus II, or physics I or physics II or physics III? Do we take a placement test? Also, do we get to choose our electives or are they chosen for us?

^There are placement tests on the first few days.

@Iamquiteloud‌ where’d you get that number? I don’t think it’s that high…

@lilmonet1‌ you take placement tests when you get there. They do a good job in placing you in classes such that you’re challenged, and you get a change to rank electives. They do their best to put you in your top 2 choices.

@poisonivy20 thank you!
@Eutectic‌ thank you! Are you a MITES alum or were you saying you got that info from a MITES alum?

@Eutectic I saw it in their OEOP Facebook Page a while back. Here is what it said:
