Discarding the tempting idea of five concurrent undergraduate degrees (impossible to carry out, appealing though it is), I’m leaning very strongly towards computer science and mathematics; I’ve had an infatuation for a while now with the concept of artificial intelligence, and the thought of machines that can respond, learn, and think, and I think it’s the field where I might end up. I’ve always been fascinated by true inter-disciplinary study, part of the reason why I’m applying to MIT. Course 2-A in the Mechanical Engineering Department is one program that interests me. A program that enables me to be able to, in my study of mechanical engineering combine my interests in biology, and also challenge myself with research into applications of nanotechnology seems to be ideally suited to what I wish to do in the future. The manner in which it allows me to shape the direction of my own study also serves as an impetuous for my interest in Course 2-A.

It’s the bridge between science and the real world, the fusion of idea and action. Why do I love engineering? It’s because I’ve always wanted my actions, the creations of my mind to come to fruition, to have a tangible effect. At MIT, I would like to be part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. I’ve always been fascinated by the nature of the world around me, by what makes up each particle of the Universe, and this is why I wish to gain a unique macro and micro perspective of the world through study of Materials Engineering.
