MITES 2010 Information & Discussion

@Marbe27:
Aaaw… stuy? That puts us in a rough position, lol. I go to Bronx Science.
Last week I went to Stuy to practice for the NYSML with the NYC Math Team. I met your math team coach - awesome guy - Mr Cocoros. It was actually the first time I ever saw stuy (not even in pictures had I seen it before, lol), and I gotta say, although you guys have a nice building, BxSci rules!

Technically all you need for AB or BC is precalc. You do not need to know calc, although it helps. From the course description, Calculus I at MITES is a very introductory level calculus course in which they probably just barely finish the basics of differentiation (both AB and BC cover much more than this). However, even though it’s an introductory course, it’ll give you a great edge in whichever calculus you take next year.

@ambaturkey11:
I don’t think they’ll let us out alone. I really hope so, because I’ve never been to Boston and would love to go and explore the city without adult supervision xD. A friend of mine took a math summer program at Boston U last year and he told me that they let them out freely (they were sophomores) so I really really hope we can get out.

i’ve heard from some people who attended MITES in the past that you’re allowed to go around boston (if you find the time) but you just have to go with a TA (usually undergrad or grad students who may have attended MITES as a high school student), who are supposed to be really cool, so i don’t think it’ll feel like you’re with an adult supervisor.

I just sent in my forms for MITES. I’m really excited about living on the MIT campus for 6 weeks as it has been my dream school since 6th grade. I’m also really nervous at the idea of taking classes there…I just don’t want to fail anything lol.
Anyway, does anyone know how they determine which calculus and physics classes to place us in? I’m taking AP Calculus AB and AP Physics C right now and I don’t really know which classes I should be in.
Also do any of you that have been accepted have a facebook? It would be nice to meet people before I get there.
you guys can look me up on facebook. my name is Ayantu Regassa.
or email me at ayantu_r@yahoo.com. or skype me: ayantu20
thanks
and congrats to all of you who got in.

@ayantu
join the facebook group! =] [MIT MITES 2010 | Facebook](<a href=“Facebook Public Group | Facebook”>Facebook Public Group | Facebook)

CONGRATS! MITES determines which classes you take (except humanities and your elective) by placement tests at the beginning of the program.

@kere
thanks. Congrats to you too!

@kere:
I guess that’s ok. I can imagine the TAs at MIT being really cool, and they will probably tell us about the cool places to visit

Hmm. I want to visit Harvard and Tufts while we’re there.

And I plan on taking BC also after calculus at MITES! It’s my district’s first Calculus BC class ever.

Anyone else having last minute doubts? erg! Forms are due soon, and i still cannot make up my mind.

@alliecal - my daughter is.

Can I ask what are your concerns?
Are you weighing another offer?

@2011VAMom yes, i do have other offers! and i was all set for them, so even though being accepted to mites is amazing, it throws everything off. idk what to choose. really, all of these prestigious programs have tremendous benefits. and all look great on college apps. so i guess it’s just my personal preference, but i only have a few days!?! does your daughter have other programs she’s interested in?

Congrats to everyone! I joined the MITES 2010 fb group in case you have questions about the program! Feel free to message me on here as well!

Soo I still haven’t gotten anything at all. I emailed MITES last Thursday and didn’t get a response. I called and left a message today also. I blame this on the mailmen around my neighborhood; I don’t even know how many times we get letters that are supposed to go to a different address…

got a rejection letter by mistake… placed on the wait list. does anyone know how many people are usually on the wait list?

^
That’s the same thing that happened to me! I have no clue how many get in. I guess it depends on how many of the accepted people choose not to attend. With you, that makes four waitlistees on CC. I’m guessing there’s around 20-25 waitlisted people…? Good luck!

Still no contact…what should I do?

@zack1236
Oh wow, that’s not good! You still haven’t received a reply? Try calling them again or sending an e-mail. Maybe they are just really busy right now. However, they should reply to your call/e-mail since it’s pretty important. I sent them an e-mail with a question about 4 days ago and did not get a reply.

hmm I guess I’ll write another email and hope for the best. This is probably a sign that I got rejected but I just want to know for sure!

I sent the forms in via email for my daughter and was just wondering if anyone is getting confirmation via email or call that their forms have been recieved?

Thanks.

@2011VAMom
nope, i didnt get a confirmation letter of any sorts. But, soon we shoukld be getting a large packet with all the information that we need for the program so im guessing that when people start getting those we’ll find out whether or not they received our forms. :slight_smile:

i called yesterday. no one picked up :confused: i trust the mail service though :slight_smile: lol

I just wanted to let everyone know that I called this number 617-253-3298 and actually got someone live. She checked and said that all was recieved for my D.

Also, my D just got an email confirmation as well. When she sent the forms via email as a .pdf she asked them to email her back to confirm receipt.

Hope that helps.
