Errr… rejected. :(

okay everyone log in now to that site:
Dear Applicant

The Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) Program actively seeks out students who demonstrate bright promise of ability and interest in science, engineering and technology. As the demand for MITES grows, the selection process becomes increasingly competitive. This year the selection committee has completed the effort of carefully reviewing over 2,000 applications to this year’s summer session. Our selection was not solely based on academic achievement (i.e., test scores, grades, class rank), but a host of other factors that are aligned with the program’s objectives.

We believe that you are a highly talented student who shows great promise in science and engineering. Due to the limited number of students that we can admit into the program, we unfortunately were not able to offer you a position in the program for this summer.

If you are considering applying to MIT please do not let this decision discourage you. MIT Admissions decisions are completely separate from the MITES application process. Many students who are not admitted to the MITES Program are accepted to MIT as freshmen.

Despite this decision, we encourage you to continue to seek out enrichment opportunities in preparation for a career in engineering or the sciences. You may wish to visit our website: [Enrichment Programs](<a href=“MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science”>MITES – MIT Introduction to Technology, Engineering and Science) to inquire about other national and regional programs for high school students.

Thank you so much for applying to the MITES 2013 Program. We wish you much success in your future academic and personal endeavors.

Sincerely,
MITES Staff

Wooooooooooooooooooooooot

Dear Applicant:

Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected to join the 2013 Minority Introduction to Engineering & Science (MITES) Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This is a wonderful accomplishment and you should be very proud! The program will begin on Friday, June 14 and end on Saturday, July 27. We look forward to working with you and an exceptional group of students from all over the country this year. The 2013 MITES class will represent a diversity of communities, cultures, interests and academic successes.

We are certain that during the six weeks of the program, you will learn a great deal about yourself and your new group of friends. As a participant in the MITES program, you will have the opportunity to learn a multitude of topics at MIT, one of the leading science and technology institutions in the world. In addition to what will be a unique experience that will expand your knowledge, you will have the opportunity to attend informative lectures, tours and several organized trips in and around Cambridge and Boston. On the weekends, you will also have the chance to visit museums, the beach, local tourist spots, and attend social gatherings.

Even though you will have the opportunity to have fun, we need to inform you that you will experience a challenging academic environment. There will be a lot of studying and homework. Regardless of experiences you may have had in other summer programs, MITES is not a summer camp! We expect you to have fun, of course, but if you are not prepared to work very hard during the six and a half weeks of MITES, please do not accept a place in the program. You have been selected from a pool of over 2,000 applicants to be one of our 2013 MITES students and the selection committee has determined from your application that you are capable of doing the work in this program. This, however, does not mean that it will be easy. In order to succeed in MITES, students must be willing to push their academic limits sometimes beyond what they feel is comfortable.

To have an idea of the work involved in MITES, you should know that in addition to the seven or so hours of mandatory scheduled classes and labs each weekday, the 2012 students reported spending at least 5 dedicated hours per weekday and 4-6 hours per weekend day working on their coursework, individually and in study groups. If you are not prepared to study and learn high-level courses in the life sciences, humanities, mathematics, physics, and other STEM-related coursework or if you do not feel up to the MITES challenge, please DO NOT accept the invitation to attend. Also, we expect that arriving participants will have a working knowledge of trigonometry in order to be prepared for the mathematics course. Students who attend this program rate it very highly.

Please remember that in order to reserve your place in the program, you will need to accept your offer on or before Wednesday, April 24, 2013. If you are not able to accept our offer, please notify us as soon as possible so that we can offer the position to another candidate before the program begins. If we do not receive a reply by April 24th, you will no longer be considered for a position in the MITES program.

All MITES students are required to pay for their own transportation to and from MIT. All other expenses associated with the program will be provided by the MIT Office of Engineering Outreach Programs (OEOP). MIT is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which is a short distance from Boston, MA. Students are expected to arrive at the Simmons Dormitory (229 Vassar Street, Cambridge, MA 02139) on MIT’s campus by 4 pm on Friday, June 14th, 2013. Students traveling to MIT by air should schedule an incoming flight to arrive at Boston’s Logan Airport between 8:00AM and 3:00PM (Eastern Daylight Time) on Friday, June 14th, 2013. MITES staff members (identified by signs or MITES T-shirts) will meet students at the curbside nearest the baggage area. If you cannot schedule a flight between 8:00AM and 3:00PM, try to schedule one that arrives prior to 8:00AM rather than after 3:00PM. Please note that you should not arrive prior to June 14th as housing will not be provided.

Additional information regarding the program will be mailed to you. Upon receipt and review of the information that will be provided in the mailed packet, please provide your choice in the options provided by April 24, 2013.
