MLB post season thread

There is a family in my hometown who had a baby in 2006 (Cardinals won World Series), had a baby in 2011 (Cardinals won World Series), and is pregnant/has had baby in 2013 (Cardinals in World Series)…

Not a Red Sox fan (hard to be when you are a lifelong Tiger fan - plus, I have cousins who are annoyingly rabid Sox-fans). However, one of my first memories of baseball rivalry is the Cardinals/Tigers series in '68 … so not a Cards fan, either. I have avoided this series. It’s easier that way. ;)

Remember Calvin Schiraldi, who didn’t do so great in 1986? He was in my HS class. We had government together. He was a quiet kid. Another classmate, Kelly Gruber, went on to play third base for Toronto and won a Gold Glove or two. Yes, our high school won the state championship in baseball that year.

What is a good price for tickets? My S and his roommate just bought two tickets for $500 (bleachers above Red Sox bullpen) from a guy they found on Craig’s list. They met him at South Station this afternoon to do the deal. The price sounds a little low to me.

Watch out, there are a lot of fake tickets especially on Craig’s list. Unless you are an expert, you won’t be able to tell. You can’t get into the park with a fake ticket. I heard tickets go for thousands today.

MaineLonghorn,

Now I get why you chose your user name. Both players were drafted in the 1st Round too. Schiraldi may have been overworked in 1986 as he lost something and didn’t pitch as effective in the World Series. He saved quite a few games for the Sox.

Did you play HS baseball with them or see any of their games?

Should be start picking on poor Ken now? In a way, if his retirement is really true, there is just one more reason for this series to come to a quick end. :)

All I know about Game 6 is what Good Will Hunting showed me.

Of course, there is a particular Game 6 involving that darn St Louis team that I rather forget all about. Mark Lowe to David Freese … a moment to be remembered in infamy. A stolen series! :)

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO GLOAT

I must have ESP, you guys should have put your bets with me!

So can you please tell me who I’m supposed to bet wins the Super Bowl? The NBA Finals? The Stanley Cup? And the BCS National Championship? What about the Mega-Lotto drawing?

Come on now, I need some big money to pay off my student loans!

Congrats on your new found fortune!

Great win by the Red Sox!

In perspective, taking out the inclination of everyone here to proclaim everything as “the best” or “the greatest”, this is an achievement that ranks second to the Amazing Mets of 1969. Unlike the Sox, the Mets had never had a winning season before 1969. In their short existence, they had won: 40, 51, 53, 50, 66, 61 and 73 games. And then they won 100 games, beat Atlanta in the playoff, and then beat the Baltimore Orioles, best team of that era in the American League. I remember every person on the street asking my dad and me: “Do you think they can do it?” Get into a cab: “Do you think they can do it?” Buy some candy: “Do you think they could do it?” Coming from behind the Cubs - as the Cubbies collapsed - it seemed, well, Amazing!

By contrast, the Sox were coming back from an anomaly season in which they dumped huge contracts, were hurt by a number of injuries and had a completely dysfunctional manager/coach/player dynamic. (Has another team had 2 pitching coaches? with one not talking to the other? with some players only talking to one?) Four key players were important winning in 2007 and 3 others had been in the World Series with other teams. Terrific turnaround. Full credit to Ben Cherrington.

Great year Sox…you deserved it

Well, I’m glad the Red Sox won.

Lergnom, thanks for having this Cub fan relive THAT season again.

Gourmetmom,
Hope your son didn’t get scammed and really got a great deal! Please let us know.

Just a few short years ago, people taunted/insulted Red Sox fans by chanting 1918, having gone 86 years between championships. It seems like they are making up for lost time…
As they say, “cue the duckboats” for the parade…
If I worked for Gillette or Schick, I’d be offering all the players an endorsement deal…so get clean shorn…

They were scammed - the tickets were fake. When they entered the line to have their tickets scanned, it was obvious to the ticket taker. S’s roommate arranged the deal - felt really confident that it was legit - thought he could spot a fake because he is a regular season ticket holder and knows what a ticket looks like. S had his doubts but wanted to support his roommate. They were hugely disappointed and embarrassed to be such an easy mark. They have the guy’s cell and home numbers and found his home address - can they do anything to put a stop this guy’s enterprise?

Yes. Report him to the police, threaten to report him to the police, etc. It’s a genuine felony and they will arrest and prosecute.

Cardinals had a great run during a transition season. They’ll be back.

Red Sox were better ALL THE WAY around. Congratulations, Boston!

Rogers Hornsby was once asked what he did during the winter. He answered, “I stare out the window and wait for spring.”

Only 3 1/2 months or so til spring training … :)

Hornsby wouldn’t even read or go to the movies because he believed his eyes would weaken. One of the most disliked players in history: egotistical and selfish, considered as mean as Ty Cobb but without the redemptive aspect of being a team player. Growing up I read every book about old baseball, starting with The Glory of Their Times. (My favorite remains a book that tells the story of the 1927 Yankee season through annotated newspaper stories. It’s amazing: Babe Ruth signing autographs between innings for fans crammed in along the foul lines, being followed by crowds of children through the streets.) It’s really tough to find anything nice said about Hornsby, other than that he could hit. His few partial defenders said things like he didn’t drink or smoke - and wanted everyone else to do the same - though he was a degenerate gambler who lost every dollar he made.
