MOG (mother of groom) needs dress advice

Oops, Consolation, sorry did not see the question. There are several options for the bra things that go under sheer top dresses:

  1. A strapless bra or a bandeau bra:
    http://www.barenecessities.com/marie-jo-tom-strapless-t-shirt-bra-012-0828_product.htm?pf_id=MarieJo0120828&search=
  1. A Nubra
  2. A bra with replaceable straps that are swapped out with silicone ("invisible") straps.

2 is when the dress has no back, #1 and 3 are for dresses that can cover the bra band. Option #3 might be the best for ladies with chests larger than DD.

Actually, if the bra color matches the skin tone well (like Marie Jo’s Tom does for me), I just leave the regular straps in and convert it to the halter bra. The dark colored mesh tops usually mask the straps well. One caveat: flash photography can and will bring out the “hidden treasures.”

@snowball That dress is very pretty!

Shellfell - I have no dress advice but grew up In Syracuse and remember that you posted a while back asking for advice about a rehearsal dinner venue. Where did you decide to have the event?

Deega - We’re doing it at Dino BBQ. In consultation with bride and groom, we wanted a venue that was casual, wouldn’t feel like a 2nd wedding, and the bride liked the idea of showing off her hometown with a Syracuse insitutiion, even though she’s vegetarian. They have a separate banquet room, so we’ll avoid the noise and craziness of the restaurant.

Consolation : re:bras. Some, but not many that I’ve tried on, have built in bras. Otherwise, BB’s response covers it. Even the v-back dresses I’ve tried would accommodate a bra since the back doesn’t come lower than the bra. The RL dresses I’ve tried have snaps on the underside of the shoulder to keep bra straps in place.

The AP dress in #90 is beautiful, but is more glitz than I want. I don’t want to outshine the bride or have my dress be the one everyone’s talking about.

snowball - Very pretty dress. Before looking at the dress, I was expecting a totally pink dress, but I think it’s tempered by the lining and would be appropriate. I understand not getting much direction. My FDIL only gave me the colors in April, and originally said her mother wouldn’t pick her dress until the summer. Fortunately, her mother picked her dress 6 weeks ago, so now I know what everyone else is wearing, but until then I was clueless. My FDIL has also said that if I love a dress that should be the one I wear. This wedding, at least how the wedding party is dressing, is more formal than I expected, but is definitely not fancy, so I have a fine line to negotiate.

Shellfell:

If you liked the dress in post # 85 and you tried it on at Nordstrom and it was fraying or coming apart, it certainly could have just been because it had been in the store for awhile and many people have tried it on! It’s Adrianna Papell, a very well known dress maker. So my feeling is if you like it to order it from Zappos, free shipping both ways just like Nordstrom, and try it on again in the comfort of your own home. It would most likely be in better condition and perhaps not tried on a million times.

snowball: pretty! When I was married, the bridesmaids wore royal blue and so did my mil. It really looked fine. My own mother wore silver and everyone looked coordinated. The dress you selected is really nice  Glad to hear the bride gave you some flexibility! It makes things a bit easier, imo.

Go with comfort and then style!

My FDIL really does not sweat the small stuff in any situation, so I really think she doesn’t care what my mother, MIL and I wear! I just don’t want everyone to look at the pictures down the road and wonder why in the world was I wearing a different color.

That all said, I am not sure other than the bridesmaids dresses, any thought has been given to colors. Maybe I should tell my FDIL what color I am wear and she can build the colors around me.

Check out Saks Off 5th - there are some lovely gowns, very reasonably priced.

My rule was that I had to be able to wear a regular, comfortable bra. I tend to fidget with straps and underwires already, and did not need that bother.

I love, love, love that dress, snowball. It reads as fairly neutral in color and it seems like it could really blend with most any color scheme.

This one is a little dramatic!
Okay, I’m done looking for today!

Shellfell: I still like the very first Alex Evenings dress…are there any others that you are happy with the comfort, style & fit? So many great dress links…

I lied! Here’s yet another…

@chocchipcookie The dresses you linked to in posts #111 and #113 are very pretty!

A silk dress by Issa from the Outnet:

and another silk one:

This one is polyester, but still looks gorgeous:

These are out of the OP’s price range, but I’m posting these for the lurkers who could be interested.

Yes, navy seems to be the new black! When I though I was going to have to wear navy, there were so many dresses, even more than there were black dresses.

I really like that second Marchesa dress, @BunsenBurner.

As an aside, you ladies better stick around to help me down the line. My younger daughter recently got engaged. The wedding is over a year away, and I am not nearly up to this step of it, but when I am, I’ll know who to ask!

I’ve always like Navy color even when I was younger. Black is more serious IMO. I’m not a serious person.
