I can pay attention to Time magazine and any number of other things and still be aware of “big problems.” Also, I breastfed my son and he still had asthma, eczema, RSV and caught every single virus that was in a 50 mile radius. I can only imagine it would have been worse if I hadn’t breastfed.

The main purpose^^was to increase the sales of Time. Sales of all magazines, but esp. Time and Newsweek, are at record lows.

“So much real problems” is the result of reading too much of these publications, as well as online content.

-For 4 years? If so, you did your best, kuddos!

Wait–if we didn’t read publications or online content there wouldn’t be any problems?

-You are addressing this to the one who do not read at all. I cannot remember anything, so it is a waste of time for me to read anything or pay too much attention to somebody saying anything. I am passed that long time ago. I have tried to read on vacation, anything, something, it was extremely boring…no more, I rather play ping pong…

Romani, I would agree that parents should not make important decisions that affect their kids when they are under the influence of substances.
They may do things like - get too stoned and squash them, before a 12 hr trip- tie the family dog to the roof of the car, or continue to take addictive drugs while pregnant.

( this just in- some people apparently make bad decisions, even without being high)
:o

I’m sorry to see the discussion center on the appropriate age for breastfeeding. I honestly don’t care what people do with their kids, so long as they aren’t neglected or abused. And that’s my issue with the photo. I see a famewhore using her kid to get on a magazine cover and publicize her blog (and no doubt an eventual book), and that verges mighty close to abusive behavior in my mind. That boy will have to live with that photo forever. Her behavior puts her squarely in the category of women who are an embarrassment to their entire gender (along with the real housewives of whatever county, Snooki, and the readers of 50 Shades of Grey).

^^well said MommaJ, I agree

ditto on the “well said”

I’m a third on the well said, J.

I’m wondering is any of you read the book “Room”? It’s written in the voice of the five-year old who is the main character. He and his mother have lived in a single room as kidnapping victims (think Jaycee Dugard) his entire life and he still nurses. Eventually she weans him in a scene that is both memorable and beautiful. The wonderful thing about this book is how the author is able to write an entire complex book in the voice of a very bright five-year old. Everything he experiences is captured beautifully and his feelings about nursing are also conveyed truthfully. True, the circumstances are unusual, and I’m not bringing this up to prove anything except for the beautiful way the character is able to take us into his world and the importance and connection he places on that activity.

I think that is exactly the kind of discussion publication of the photo was intended to stimulate. The thought was that these kinds of discussions invariably get very contentious. Controversy sells magazines.

mimk6, that sounds like a very good novel. Who is the author?

“Her behavior puts her squarely in the category of women who are an embarrassment to their entire gender (along with the real housewives of whatever county, Snooki, and the readers of 50 Shades of Grey).”#307

Amazon lists “Room” recommended by #311 as a book also bought by readers of 50 Shades of Grey. Be careful.

Until the above comment I had never heard of 50 Shades of Grey.

“Room” is by Emma Donoghue. It is nothing like 50 Shades of Grey which I have not read, but read a review of. “Room” is a wonderful and moving read.

I thought both sounded good. Thanks for the rec. :)

I certainly don’t care what people read. That’s between them and whatever they’re reading.

I agree. Otherwise, it is known as censorship.

Not censorship to have an opinion about a book. I came of age in the sixties and feel like I have some pretty solid feminist credentials. It truly pains me to see women denigrate themselves, whether by posing on the cover of Time, making a drunken spectacle of oneself on television, or turning a piece of badly written porn into a raging best seller. We have daughters and granddaughters. We need to do better than that.

Emphasis on badly written. REALLY badly written. Shudders.
