Montclair State University restructuring raises concerns about the future of the humanities

Came here to post - a very good thought-provoking article.
Montclair is neither like ASU nor like Marymount. At Marymount, a smallish regional private college, they needed to refocus on vocational majors (general business administration, nursing) and that makes a lot of sense. At flagship-huge ASU, the disastrous “AZ voucher” experiment that bled educational coffers dry led to changes but the restructuring into interdisciplinary schools has kept traditional majors and guaranteed funding for Humanities&Social Sciences. Montclair isn’t a flagship so doesn’t have the same intrinsic academic responsibility but it’s not a small local college that can become a vocational training center with gen eds, either.
