In her honor, a good streaming series to watch would be Mrs. America- on Hulu and Disney+. I really enjoyed the 9 episodes - which says something because I generally don’t love historical series. Gloria was featured in the series but an actress portrayed her.
Ms. Steinem’s contribution to advancing the fight for the equality of women is revolutionary. I owe so much to her.
Gail Collins: I Already Miss Gloria Steinem

For a heart-stopping moment I thought you were posting that Gail Collins had died! I know her husband, who gets a nice nod in this piece, died a couple years ago.
I don’t know why I keep thinking Gloria Allred who is still a practicing attorney - I just had to look up. I’ll have to read up on Ms. Steinem - I know the name but not assuredly her role.
Please do. Her contributions to the women’s rights movement are immensely important.
Interesting, I will send her bio to my daughter. My daughter’s HS AP research paper was on female genital mutilation and Ms. Steinem wrote an article, that according to her wikipedia, brought the subject into US Consciousness.
What a life - from playboy bunny to working for a group funded by the CIA to having an abortion when not legal and more. Interestingly, one person spoke against her involvement for getting abortion on the 1972 George McGovern platform - saying she didn’t take it up strongly.
Who knows - no matter who is involved and when, politics is a tough game.
Wow, admittedly I knew nothing about Ms. Steinem - looks like she did 20 lives worth of things.
I’ll have to read up on Ms. Allred too - I know shes’s involved in protecting women - legally.
She went undercover as a bunny to expose the practices.
Yes you are correct. Just reread. She was proud of her work - as a journalist. I read proud of her work.
It also says High Hefner changed some sexual testing requirements so she made an impact there.
Anyway, I didn’t know about her but obviously she was very impactful on society. Good to learn new things.
Not dissing anyone but I have to say I’m shocked that you have not heard of Gloria Steinem!!!
I’m honest about it. And I definitely heard of but also merging the name with Allred, likely because one is in the news a lot more in recent years.
I’m guessing many couldn’t tell you much about her, even if they know the name.
That’s just life. Not everyone has the same knowledge base about really - many things.
I am guessing you are younger than many of us which makes a difference!
Late 50s - maybe that’s why.
All the girls I’ve dated / married (one) are liberal socially but I’m not sure any where feminists or highlighted a feminist politician or figure. I’m also male.
But I’m always interested in learning. With the news and I watch a lot, Gloria Allred always seems on tv or in the media - so I may not know who she represents (usually women) but she’s the one I know - like she’s the main event…it’s perhaps why I know of her.
Well, I’m younger than all of you and I’m well acquainted with her.
But part may be a factor of when one moved to the US if not from here originally
Anyway, I don’t know why I made the comment. Didn’t mean to get bashed.
I was just surprised that I knew of her (name) but didn’t really know much about her - but the reaction here and on my facebook from females (on facebook and perceived females here) was very heavy - so I took note. So it’s sad, I suppose, that I didn’t. But we all can’t know about everyone - sports figures, musicians - that’s more my jam.
Truly I wasn’t bashing you - or anyone who is not the least familiar with her -As I said it just shocks me!
It’s sort of like someone saying they never heard of Ruth Bader Ginsburg!
Better late than never. Did you talk about her with partner and/or kids?
I certainly wasn’t bashing you, just surprised you hadn’t heard of GS. Growing up in the US in the 70’s, it was hard to not see her on the TV or in the newspapers.
