Over the past week, I passed a zillion “smoke shops” (i.e., unregulated cannabis sellers) in lower Manhattan and several areas of Brooklyn. Because it was relatively warm outside, many of them had their doors wide open. At least the official licensees are diligent checking IDs and such, and I am sure they would question a kid in high school that had ID stating they were 21 or older–there are stringent penalties for selling to under 21s and I imagine NYS sends agents with fake ID to check.
When we lived in NY years ago, a friend’s college son was involved in a fake ID project that caused big legal issues. There was something about the process (I think photos being taken in front of an enlarged driver’s license?) that broke laws beyond just drinking age violation.
It is definitely a shame. Nothing is new under the sun unfortunately.
Funny, I had a friend who was doing exactly that in NY, way back in the late '70s. He was a very talented graphic designer, went to Music and Arts high school. He and his friends made a giant driver’s license, and sat in front of it, to take pix they then laminated, to make fake IDs. They were very realistic. No problems getting into Studio 54 with them!
Can’t read the article but the premise is a given. Cannabis is not as bad as heroin. Duh.
Anecdata - but my S23’s experience with his peers has been that no one blinks twice when he says he doesn’t drink, but they are surprised that he doesn’t smoke, or use edibles. “At all? Really? Oh…well, ok.”
Seems like the attitude is that pot is just vaguely benign so it’s surprising that you wouldn’t use it from time to time, yet it’s understandable that someone wouldn’t drink (and unlike when I was a young person, his peers couldn’t care less that he doesn’t drink, and don’t pressure him to do it and he still goes to parties).
My kid knows pot is not great for his brain, and I’ve simply said that if he does decide to try it, to please only try something purchased from a dispensary, not something at a party as you never know what else might be in it.
I get the sense that kids see pot as being “natural” and “beneficial” (it’s a plant, so of course it’s good for you, just like essential oils and crystals, juices and kombucha) and that really concerns me.
I’m really glad neither of my boys have ever smoked or ingested marijuana.
