More tragedy in Orlando

Well, it looks like they are already starting to put up a fence, although people are saying that gators can climb over. them. http://www.local10.com/news/disney-appears-to-be-building-fence-on-beach-of-alligator-attack

Maybe the fence is intended to keep people out.

I hope no one attempts to climb over it.

@raclut I agree. The fact that we even had that thought is a bad testimonial to human nature.

I definitely think that is the goal. That, and reducing any liability they might have going forward.

They are building a wall. All across the border.

People don’t necessarily pay attention to fences.

We were just in a redwood park in CA and the docent needed to admonish some young women who went over the fence to take photos next to the trees. Their response was that there was no sign telling them not to go over the fence. They had no concept of the purpose of the fence. Fortunately this was not an unsafe situation like Disney.

Hopefully with the fence and additional signage that will alert visitors so that this doesn’t happen again.
Disney will do what they can to make it safer but guests need to follow the rules and be sensible too.
Signs like “don’t feed the alligators” would also help.

There was a sign at Niagra Falls on the fence saying not to climb over the fence. Really people!

@jym626 wow! Someone may say we didn’t climb over it we jumped over it. That’s not the same thing. There will always be someone that won’t follow the rules. The point is to enjoy these places but be safe. I can’t imagine what it takes to monitor the alligators at Walt Disney World. It is definitely a big effort and a very challenging one.

Might this be a case of attractive nuisance?

Maybe some people will climb over the fence. However it should keep small children out of harms way.

When I saw the fence reported on the news, they said it was temporary until Disney decided on a more permanent solution.

@jym626, 20 to 40 people are swept to their deaths at Niagra Falls PER YEAR! Most are suicides.

I’ve seen many people allow their children to climb on the fences at the Falls and even more who climb over the fences to get ‘better’ photos. Poor judgment abounds.

Harambe the gorilla was shot dead, because a kid climbed over the fence.

@GMTplus7 You’re right about that. There is only so much these places can do to protect visitors so that they have a safe visit. They can’t control the behavior of visitors who choose to interpret rules to what suits them.

Aside from alligators I am sure there are other dangerous things in the water. Does Disney have to list each thing that could potentially be a risk on their signs? It is swampy water that may have snakes, and mosquitoes and other dangers.

I definitely feel both set of parents were treated differently. In one case there was lots of compassion for the parents and in the other case a lot of hatred and ridicule. I am sure the parents of the boy in the zoo sense that they were subjected to severe criticism. In one case parenting skills were challenged and in the other one it was not.

That’s because one set of parents has a dead child and the other doesn’t.

I think some of the sympathy towards the family at WDW is because the boy died, although there was a fair amount of backseat parenting in both instances. I think some of the criticism in the zoo incident is because folks could easily perceive an outcome whereby the gorilla boy would have been killed as well.

edit: crossposted with gmt’s post who said the same more succinctly.

So am I to understand that compassion is earned when there is a death involved? So if there is no death , one can’t question ?
