Well, my H’s mom gave our family of seven (two of whom are away at different colleges) an electric toothbrush to share. They sent it to us last August.

But this year, I gave a weird gift myself. My 12-year-old D was going on and on about how great “The Red Violin” is, so I bought it for my D for Christmas, and wrapped it up, not really looking it. So D opens it and starts giggling, “Mom, did you know you got me an R rated movie?” OOPS.

My daughter gave her boyfriend “mono”–the plush toy. A friend of hers thought that was such a great idea that he gave the same thing to his girlfriend.

I’ve been meaning to watch “The Red Violin” again. Saw on the big screen when it came out, picked up the DVD. It’s a haunting movie. But there’s nothing in it that would trip my triggers about a 12-year-old seeing it. Of course, I had to pick up my jaw when I found that one of D’s hs classmates wasn’t allowed to see “Shakespeare in Love” because of its very brief partial nudity/sex scene, so YMMV.

This year Doddsdad and I gave each other wood laminate flooring. That’s what happens when you buy a house around the Christmas.

DS asked that we donate books and toys to a hospital in his name for Christmas this year.

DD got two pair of Converse Chuck Taylor high tops. You guessed it a red pair and a bright green pair. For Christmas dinner at a friend’s house she wore one of each to celebrate the season (really, Doddsdad dared her to do it)

Glad to hear that, TheDad, I’m planning to watch the DVD tomorrow to see if there is anything the 12 year old couldn’t handle. I’m looking forward to it! I’m hoping it will be okay. If not, well, then, we’ll put it aside for a couple of years. Also, I see that I mistyped abpve–it was the 12 year old’s violin teacher that was going on about The Red Violin, not the 12 year old.

Beurah, wow. Hope that goes well. I cannot think of a more meaningful gift.

My most unusual gift was a collaboration between my son and stepdaughter. Son took a darling head-shot of our dog (with whom I am mildly obsessed) and e-mailed it to my stepdaughter, who had two sheets of USPO-approved stamps made. If only she had remembered the two-cent increase coming up in a few days…www.stamps.com for anyone else who’s interested in making a celebrity of their loved ones, two or four-footed.

Dizzymom – what a neat idea! Thanks.

The nicest unusual, but FANTASTIC, gift dh and I received was from our daughter. In addition to a lovely camera case and book for me, and a DVD and game for dh, we received a letter from our local rescue mission that she had donated enough money in our name to feed two dozen people for Christmas dinner. Last year, she adopted two angels (in our names) and bought them lots of clothes and toys. Those, to me, are the most meaningful gifts.
