I guess the big question…how much need based aid was this student getting? If the college doesn’t meet full need for all, the student may not have been getting a huge amount. We also don’t know what the step parent income is.
This all might be a dong and dance for no reason. Does the grandmother know her daughter and spouse financials?
Tough situation for sure. Not everyone is on top of all the financial aid stuff and Mom probably never realized that stepdad’s income would be necessary for aid. I also got married when D was in high school (I knew how aid worked) and would never expect my husband to contribute to her education. He already paid for his two kids. I thank goodness every day that “we” (she and I) chose the school “we” did…had she chosen a different school, it may have become unaffordable given tuition increases and the fact that my husband’s income doubled in one year, coincidentally the second year for financial aid purposes. I wish this family the best, would hate to see this student have to transfer in her senior year.
