Moving from east coast to west coast

Man, for an extra $300 or so you could have had one heck of a fun road trip (less if you like to camp out). I’ve driven my 2003 Ford Focus cross-country three times, and teach trip has been better than the last.

Except for when there’s those wildfires threatening to burn down campus…

If I were you, I’d drive it. The fun of a roadtrip across the country is unparalled. I’ve done it a few times in the past, and I hope to do it many times more should I get the chance. With TSA being such a pain these days, there’s no reason not to do so.

As for things - it’s best that you don’t bring too many things from home. First of all - forget about bringing consumables unless you need them immediately. Hauling them is usually more pain than it’s worth. Ideally, it should be two or three large suitcases, and no more. Most of it should be clothes.

Yes, public transportation is a nightmare in southern California, and your 2006 Honda Accord would work very well. They’re very popular in SoCal, so you’ll fit right in. As for the plates - you don’t need them. You can usually do inspections in California and mail the info back to NC. Just do research on the websites of both DMVs. My parents once gotten away with having Nevada plates for two years while being residents of California. It was only after then before the sheriff requested that we prove nonresidency or register in CA with lots of late fees.

In terms of locational differences - everything’s much more spread out compared to the east. The roads are straighter, the towns are further away, and things are just “bigger”. It’ll be a fun and unique experience.

Thanks for the comments excel, racin, jolie, sun, and lemon. I’ve always been planning on doing a roadtrip by car across the country but just haven’t thought about it too much in detail. I think I would also enjoy this experience!

The problem is… my “niche” for college is Online Communities in Web Based Enviornments. I own some large forums with thousands of members. I use an XPS 710 at my house which is really souped up… about 2 TB of storage 4GB ram but the thing is huge. Should I bring it? I definately am not used to laptops & would much rather prefer to work in my dorm room on this desktop (THOUGH I would have an XPS laptop to take with me to classes etc). I emailed the tech department and they said some people put desktops under their lofted beds - problem is I don’t think this would fit! And also - Would I just put this thing in my car to haul it? :P

The first thing you should do is go to an In-N-Out.

As long as it’s not a server, your computer should fit in your room. Just be conscientious of your roommate if the thing has 20 fans running at all hours of the day/night you might start to annoy them (especially if your dorm lacks AC; computers can make those tiny rooms heat up mighty fast).

And, yeah, throw it in your car. Then put some light bags on top of it so nobody knows its in there.

This thing is larger than most servers! & yes it makes MY room at home hot & it has AC…

http://farm1.static.■■■■■■■■■■/148/418793102_e5c30b104b.jpg?v=0

I meant server like industrial-sized type deals. You know, the 6’+ cabinet that’s pretty much the size of a small closet. ie http://www.edludlow.co.uk/gallery/d/3003-3/27102005.jpg

Your computer doesn’t look much bigger than a standard desktop, so you should be able to shove it under your desk (maybe on its side) or ontop of your dresser if you really need it that badly.

I’m accepted! & thanks for the comments racin.

I made the move from East to West this year, and I highly stress this one fact: you MUST get a car. You really won’t be able to get anywhere without it. I thought it was an exaggeration… until I got here. Now I’m going to get my license this summer. There is so much to do in SoCal to miss out by not driving. If only the transportation system was decent.
