Depends on what she’s taking. It’s unlikely that she’ll actually be taking many engineering courses her first semester, even with a significant amount of AP credits. If you can tell me her expected AP credits, then I can give a rough schedule for her. Unfortunately, the chemistry department hasn’t put up any of its instructors on OZONE (where we register for classes). It’s extremely unusual for professors to not be assigned yet, but hopefully they’ll be up by the time your D will register for classes.
Helimom, S1 is a ChemE major and brought in 55 assorted AP credits. He took 6 credits of Engineering courses, plus O-Chem and Differential Equations among his 1st semester courses. I know he was not fond of the teaching style of the O-Chem prof (but loves the one he has for O-Chem II). I can ask about the names as I do not get that into his scheduling. We will likely go up to Norman this coming weekend to bring home any of the items he is not putting in storage. (and to bring him boxes for storing…) That way we can avoid the mess the following weekend as people move out for the summer.
When will the freshmen start registering for classes?
Are there any weed out classes? Typically they are Calc, Chem, Physics, etc.
@sunndayfun, freshmen need to sign up now for their enrollment appointment. Here is the link:
https://iadvise.ou.edu/
Before they can schedule an enrollment appointment, they need to pay the $250 deposit and take a couple of online courses about alcohol abuse and sexual assault. The last I heard, enrollment appointments are scheduled out through July (May 10 was the first open date).
Thanks! Helimom. My son still needs to enroll and pay the deposit. Stresses me out he waits until the last minute!
I sort of like him to wait to register for his classes until the AP scores are back in July. I guess he can go ahead register and then make changes based on AP results.
I had the same concern about AP scores and class scheduling. I called OU and asked how they handle enrolling prior to AP score release. Here’s the answer I got:
If the appointment is prior to release, the advisor asks the student how she felt she did on the AP test: 3 or better? If yes, then they schedule accordingly. If the student thinks she bombed the exam, they schedule down. If it’s a surprise either way when scores are released, the student contacts the advisor again and classes are adjusted up or down as needed.
For the record…Dr. Morvant is apparently a great O-Chem professor. He actually has an education background (something I personally believe that all teaching professors should be required to have). He was a certified secondary ed teacher in Texas as part of his undergrad. From my data point of 1, it appears that it helps with the delivery of information to his students.
Are the dorm doors in Walker the kind which require a doorstop to hold open? I’m making my Amazon list.
@HeliMom74, I’ll be going down later this week to help D move out of the dorm. I’ll make a point to check. My best recollection is that a doorstop would be helpful.
I guess for guys, a doorstop is a shoe, piece of laundry or old pizza box. LOL. I was just there last Friday and the whole time we were in his room the door was closed. I don’t know that it ever even occurred to me to get a doorstop.
I will say he had many things that he never used. My best advice is to go minimalist at first. You can always get additional supplies once school has started. The rooms are small, (especially if your roommate does not loft their bed.) It is hard to believe he will be home for the summer on Friday afternoon.
