Got our first rejection. D did a walk-in audition at NYC Unifieds for Ball State and they just sent an email inviting her to the BA Theatre program. They said she could audition for BFA MT again after her first semester. Hopefully better offers are to come!

@kyderbymom When did your daughter audition for LIU and when did she receive her acceptance? My D auditioned at NYC Unifieds and was told she would hear mid-February so we are anxiously awaiting!

@DramaLove2020 I am not sure I could just because there’s so many schools there and they are pretty different (like BAs versus BFAs). Something you could do is search on each of the schools and read what people have said about them. Over the years that’s what I have done and saved notes in a spreadsheet to try to give me an idea of each school. I am sorry that doesn’t help you though. Are these the schools in the running for your child?

My daughter attended a program in Kentucky called the Governor’s School for the Arts. It’s a 3-week intensive program for high school students that takes place during the summer either after sophomore or junior year. They take 256 students each summer in 9 disciplines related to the arts. My daughter was selected for Musical Theatre the summer of 2018 after her sophomore year.

In October, students who have completed GSA are invited to a College and Career Day in Louisville. GSA invites schools from around the country who specialize in different arts and hosts a college fair. Then the students who are seniors can audition in front of representatives from various universities.

The MT kids learn a dance combination and then have call times where they do their monologue and songs in front of 25-40 reps, depending on the year. After everyone has auditioned, they put up callback lists, and students can go visit with the reps. Some schools use this as a prescreen, others as an actual audition. Some schools give automatic scholarships that day. It’s kind of like Unifieds, except all of the reps are in one place.

My daughter got direct admit that day into the BFA programs of LIU, Austin Peay, AMDA, UK, WKU, Illinois U Southeast, Samford. Some of the schools like Manhattan School of Music and CCM invited her to do their prescreen. (I’m not sure why they were even there, to be honest, if they weren’t counting the audition as a prescreen
) AMDA gave her a scholarship on the spot.

It’s a great opportunity, and we were lucky that she was able to take part in it. It saved us from a lot of traveling and introduced her to schools she would not have considered otherwise.

I know that doesn’t help you. I wish I had a better answer to share.

@NYYFanNowMTdad The frustrating thing for me is that the schools my daughter is interested in are not mentioned on here at all. She is going for schools where she can graduate with a BFA and as little debt as possible. Northern Kentucky University gives GSA grads free tuition if you have a certain GPA/ACT score, so we are good at that school. Austin Peay has given her enough money that it is almost free. We are trying to decide which would be better. NKU is 15 min from Cincinnati and the theatre scene there. APSU is 45 min from Nashville and its opportunities. I wish someone had some good insight on one school or the other, because right now, both schools are pretty much equal.
