Mudd Frosh Taking Questions

Wow, thanks to everybody that posted in this thread  I just spent all of last night reading through the posts and all of them were very helpful! I had a couple more questions though, so if anybody could add input that would be really nice ;)

I’m pretty curious about the Hillel-type stuff. I found the website for the Claremont Hillel, but it would help to have just general opinions. Stuff like whether there’s matzo available during Passover and a place to go to services for Holidays and stuff.

Does applying ED help a lot, or just more like a little boost? I’m pretty sure Harvey Mudd’s my first choice right now and will probably apply ED, but need to get the okay from the parents.

Also… interviews? I’d like to have one, but would have to fly down from Seattle. (I don’t think Mudd has alumni interviews?). Are they pretty informal? Is it possible to sit-in on a few classes one day, if I end up flying down there?

Last question! Is the gender ratio really as big a deal as some people say? I’m a girl, so I wasn’t too upset to hear about the 70-30 split, but I guess I’m just a little more worried about being singled out as the ā€œtoken girl.ā€ I’ve been one of the only girls (2-3 in each class of 25-30…even worse than Mudd ;)!) in most of my classes this year and last, which is a little uncomfortable.

Thanks again! You guys really make Mudd sound like an awesome place. :)

There’s an active Hillel across the 5Cs. There are regular services, special holiday services, matzo available during passover (at least at some dining halls, I don’t know about all…and I don’t just mean regular matzo…I mean matzo tostadas, matzo ball soup…it’s pretty creative), and special accomodations made for anyone participating in fasts.

As a general rule, college interviews are relatively informal (i.e. they usually follow tours so they don’t expect you to wear anything that you don’t want to walk around in for an hour…don’t wear ripped up jeans or logo clothing, etc.). Remember where you are and what you’re trying to present, blah blah blah, but other than that, I believe I’ve heard that Mudd is as casual as the next school. I’ve heard that interviews can be pretty conversational and comfortable.

All the schools allow you to sit in on classes. If you’re flying down, you should definitely spend at least one night on campus (this can be arranged through admissions).

I’ve taken a few Mudd classes and have never felt like the ā€œtoken girl.ā€ I’ve read plenty about the gender ratio on these boards, in guidebooks, etc., but it’s never seemed overwhelmingly obvious to me around the actual school (though I do speak as an off-campus student). Also, I’ve heard from some Mudd girls that they try to provide lots of opportunities specifically geared toward women in math/science, letting the female students bond, etc.

Good luck!

2- I think it’s a boost and you’re a girl too. Thus as long as you have average stats for Mudd, I think you have a very high chance of getting in as an ED female.

3- I’m not sure about the interviews because I never had one. If you can’t get one then I wouldn’t worry too much because I think loads of people here never got an interview. Yes, you can definitely sit in on classes, especially the larger lectures. I see it happen frequently.

4-It’s really not 70-30. It’s more like 60-40. For some reason, my class was ridiculosuly bad and is around 80-20 (ā– ā– ā– ā– ). But, I don’t really notice it that much. There’s plenty of times where I’ll be hanging out with a group and I’ll suddenly realize ā€œwhoa, there’s more than 50% girls in this group.ā€ You won’t be singled out at all as a girl. There will be plenty of jokes, probably, but you won’t be singled out for it. And Mudd is the kind of place where you won’t be left out of any group for anything… race, sex, religion, etc etc. I know at most other colleges people stay with people like themselves, but that doesn’t happen at all at Mudd.

Oh yeah… and that whole ā€œthe odds are good, but the goods are oddā€ saying is wrong. There are plenty of unnatractive guys here, sure, but there are still dozens of good-looking, non-weird, guys. Mudd is about half nerds, and half normal dudes with a hidden layer of nerdness.

And also, the girls aren’t that great. Sorry, but it’s true. The jock guys usually go after girls from Scripps and friendzone girls at Mudd.

This is all from the perspective of a male frosh, by the way.

I disagree with the male frosh that the girls aren’t that great. I think most of them are really cool. Brains are beautiful man!
