Hey, I’m going to visit in the first week in August and I have an interview scheduled. Is there anything I should know? I’ve never done an interview before, so whats that like if you did it?

my interview was a lot of fun. you are just talking. dress nice but not TOO nice. be comfortable and try to be the person that you are.

it is a good idea to think about what you really want in life at this point. what are you trying to get out of mudd? how are you going to contribute to the mudd community? what do you want to do in the world? these are all questions that you should really think about in advance to the interview.

oooh. thanks for posting that link up there. that’s pretty cool, if i do say so myself.

i’m also going to visit the campus soon, since i live only 15 minutes away. i don’t know why i’ve never visited any sooner. haha. i’m excited though. are you guys in summer school right now? i was hoping i’d be able to see the student body to get the gist of the campus.

not too many students are at mudd. probably 100 total now that summer math is over. i’m actually not at mudd right now as i am working for jpl and living at caltech.

I just talked with someone who attended and loved Mudd, but actually didn’t really like it from his visit, large reason being that he came during summer. Student body and general atmosphere are a pretty big part of Mudd (and of Claremont as a whole), so make sure to take that fact into account during your summer visit (and if Mudd becomes a more serious contender, try to get back and visit while classes are in session). Don’t worry about your interview (but no matter how early you had to get up to get to campus, do not fall asleep in the car until 3 minutes before it begins b/c you will NOT speak coherently. And yes, I do know this from experience). You’ll be just fine!

(rocketDA…I actually know a Mudder who worked for JPL and lived at CalTech last summer, so that’s funny. Hope you’re enjoying it!)

Are there a lot of homosexuals at Mudd? I read somewhere that its one of the most “gay friendly” colleges in the country (whatever that means). Are they out protesting all the time?

homosexuals? yes, they are represented at mudd and the 5C’s. are they out protesting all the time? not that i know of.

Yes there are homosexuals at Mudd. No, they don’t protest, because first of all, there’s too much work to seriously put effort into activism, and second of all, Mudd and the 5C’s are generally very friendly and accepting, so as far as I can tell, there’s not any feeling of bigotry.

is it true that harvey mudd is 70% guys? how do the girls deal with that?

“the odds are good but the goods are odd” - that’s what they say.
i don’t know how they deal with it…

(you should be asking how the guys deal with it. lol)

alright. How do you guys deal with it? lol

Three words: Scripps.

:)

haha that’s one word.

“Three” + “words:” + “Scripps” = Three

WOW I visted mudd and it was AMAZING! I could totally relate to a lot of stuff that they were preaching, math/science humor and the like. However, I also LOVED CMC, esp. the “Ath” Do you mudders ever go to the “ath” or is that just a CMC thing?

I don’t think we have the Athenaeum thing that CMC has. We do, however, have interesting lectures every couple weeks and weekly “happy hours” with our profs. In addition, the Lennard (sp) Fund provides Students/Faculty money and encouragement to go out to lunch/dinner and really get to know your profs on a personal basis.

I, personally, have been invited/gone to prof’s houses for dinner with their families. Mudd pays for the meal and stuff… so the food came from some really nice restaurants and such. One time we just chatted for 6 hours around the dinner table. It was great.

It is really fun (also) to go with your prof to lunch or just hang out at parties or what-not. Yes, you can sometimes spot a prof having a good time at a party…well at least the younger ones.

And I think students at Mudd (and the other C’s) are allowed/encouraged to go to the Ath. I believe my friend went to that every week…he was always dressed up in a suit and tie on Wednesday or something.

I have personally been to the Ath, because I often go to CMC for Collins lunches (I love their pizzas and salad), and I often go to I-Place and McKenna auditorium for various activities. Apart from Mudd, CMC is probably the campus I have explored the most and spent the most time at. I like it a lot as well, and I usually have little trouble attending any activities there that I wish to, except on those occasions when they take place during classtime.

Students from any school can and do go to the Ath all the time with the exception of certain events which are designated CMC-only (the Ath has its schedule on a website and the CMC-only events are marked as such). How much you go really depends on you and your personal interests. I know people at CMC who’ve never gone and I know at least one Mudder who goes about 3 times a week, soooo it really varies! But yes…you can go and there’s nothing strange about doing so.

If you ever hear that Mudders go to the Ath less often than students of other schools, which I imagine might be true (stating possibility, not fact), I can think of two reasons: (1) An evening at the Ath can easily run 3 hours and Mudders are known for having the heaviest workload. Time commitment is probably the biggest roadblock in the way of attendance for all students; (2) Mudd is known as the most politically apathetic of the 5Cs (of course there are individual exceptions to this rule…it’s only a generality) and the Ath talks tend to be very politically oriented.

It’s a good resource and, for the most part, totally open to you. I can’t guarantee this 100%, but I’m moderately sure that even the talks designated CMC-only are open to students from all 5Cs and the only restricted part of the night is dinner (anyone sure on this fact?).

what’s the “Ath”?
