<p>I don’t think it’s like airline reservations at all. Take a look at the form you sign when you send your deposit. You’re promising to attend that school, not just “depositing,” similarly to the ED agreement. So each schhol can hold that you have broken your promise. This is especially true if the school has an honor code.</p>

<p>Not to go to battle with you, but you did raise an excellent point…read what your signing up for! You are agreeing in advance to some things like shared information among colleges. Read what you’re signing off on. </p>
<p>Again if a student is uncertain, honesty is still a very good policy. Talk to them, maybe they’ll be a bit flexible. They really aren’t terrible people.</p>

<p>That may be try but it matters how the schools discovered you broke your promise and in addition you have obly broken your promise to one of the schools. As for the honor code I think the school would be in violation of there own principals if they went snooping about and asking the neighbors. I mean isn’t tha the point of honor codes? We expect you to act honorably therefore we don’t have to spy on you?</p>

<p>Mind you I am not saying it is morally right to double deposit, but people break contracts all the time. The punishment for breaking a contract is to forfeit the surety. Double book a flight and the airline gets to keep your deposit. If they send Furio to break your legs as well then they are operating in Tony Soprano’s world.</p>
<p>BTW the real damage the school suffers is minimal, especially at the selective schools as they all have waiting lists a mile long. I wouldn’t get too broken hearted for them and juries generally take a dim view of large powerfull institutions conspiring with other large powerful institutions to punish individuals who have annoyed them.</p>
<p>It’s a terrible idea. If I found out that a CC poster did this with my university, I would contact the admissions office and present them with all available information on the poster so that they could rescind the offer of admission.</p>

The universities in the U.S. came to an agreement on the final date for accepting spots in their schools as a group. This date is MAY 1. If you double deposit, you are going against this agreed upon date. NO ONE made an agreement about housing deposits or airline tickets. BUT there is one for college decisions…and it is well known and well published by every college in the country. By May 1, students should place ONE deposit…not two or three to buy themselves more time…ONE. That is the way the system is set up. Stop trying to figure out ways to “game the system”. Get your minds made up in a timely fashion. No one said it would be easy…it’s not. But the deadline is no big secret.</p>
<p>higher … you have part of it right … there have been court cases and the courts have ruled schools can not share names of APPLICANTS and their likely outcome … this was considered restraint of trade. However, students accepted ED are in a different situation and apparently do not share the same legal protection. I’d think the ED agreement is part of removes the legal protection against restraint of trade … by applying ED the candidate is agreeing to the one-to-one transaction.</p>

<p>Guidance counselors are required to send your final transcript as proof of graduation to the college you have selected to attend. In addition your GC is also placing their academic intergrity on the line by looking the other way if your student should decide to double deposit (remember the GC is also trying to make and maintain professional relationships which get compromised when the GC upholds a student wrong and strong).</p>
<p>Lets say you double deposit at school A and B you tell your GC that you decided to go to school A. When school B does not receive the transcript, the contact the school requesting proof of graduation. GC tells college B student is not attending, college states student committed to coming GC will eventually fess up or ends up loosing “ground” with that college and develops a reputation for less than ethical practices. Would you want to be this person or do business with this person?</p>

<p>Actually that is factually untrue. I know of at least one well known school that was still soliciting applications after May 1 last year.</p>
<p>There are many schools who continue to solicit applications AFTER May 1. HOWEVER…the date of deposit for those who have been accepted prior to the late entries…in other words in the RD round or earlier is MAY 1. I apologize for wording that incorrectly. The bottom line is that IF you have been accepted to more than one school by May 1, you are supposed to choose ONE school by that date…not three or two or four…ONE.</p>

<p>Does it do that more so than asking a third party to enforce you contract?</p>
<p>The lawsuit you reference came about because schools were sitting down and comparing admitted students financial aid packages and “aligning” them i.e. making sure noone was offering a better package than anyone else. The schools realized they weren’t going to win the restraint of trade battle and reached a settlement with the Justice Department agreeing not to compare specific aid offers to specific applicants.</p>
<p>The schools are not really exemplars of honor if you define honor as fair dealing and integrity and I am not sure their vaguely defined and interpreted honor codes would stand up to much legal scrutiny. For instance who adjudicates you alleged honor code violation, where is the due proces etc.</p>
<p>Don’t confuse yout moral outrage at the double depositor with how he courts would see this.</p>

<p>Once again, the fact of enrollment and your name is not confidential nor privileged, as opposed to the contents of your application. (While this is not legal advice specific to any situation, I am a lawyer.) Schools can, in fact, share that information, just as companies share mailing lists, with little legal risk.</p>
<p>And by the way, since Sept. 11, airlines can and do review reservation lists to check multiple bookings. They even did so before then; I personally had a reservation cancelled because I had multiple reservations on different airlines.</p>
