You are definitely NOT covered by Affirmative Action. For most of the upper schools it is only blacks, hispanics, and native americans who are considered URMs. You should report yourself as either Asian or Caucasian or both.

“If you are talking about college applications, it is entirely optional to list any kind of ethnic self-designation. You can leave that question blank. About 15 percent of the enrolled class at Harvard is listed as “unknown” in Harvard’s counts of student ethnicities.”

Thank you tokenadult for that relevant and important fact.

Anyway I still say that the OP shouldn’t count on being highlighted for affirmative action, because as far as I can tell there is little background that warrants it. Since many colleges also value a diverse student body, you may be considered an asset in that way, but that is not on the same level.

Elite Colleges’ definition of “diversity” isn’t strictly limited to students who fulfill the criteria of URM. Any academically strong applicant who presents with an intriguing background and/or history, and who can express how those factors might contribute to the vibrancy of that university’s community will probably receive very careful consideration. You don’t need URM status in order to have an edge over the average applicant. And URM status alone certainly won’t guarantee you a fat envelope.

So some are saying Dominican isn’t Hispanic/Latino?

Poetsheart thanks for expanding on that idea so eloquently. I agree completely.

I also agree with poetsheart. Just because you claim a Hispanic ethnicity doesn’t really mean you can bring diversity into the school if you don’t really do or show anything Hispanic-related at all in your life…if that makes any sense. For example, I think it’s wrong even for a 1/4th Hispanic person to claim that ethnicity just to gain an “advantage” especially if this person has no interest or involvement in the Hispanic culture at all. I dunno. But also…one could argue that that’s what we would like to think versus what is actually done in admissions.

Shrinkrap - Dominicans are Hispanic…I’m not sure who you were directing this question to.

I was directing at a few posts that I thought suggested you (Spiffystars) should say caucasian and not hispanic.

Actually I just realized that spiffystars was not the op. Never mind.
