Music Supplement

oh really? Thank you that’s helpful

Feel free to ask any questions about this - sounds like you’re investigating a similar path to the one my son took. He wanted to do a double major/focus and Yale was definitely a school that stood out in this regard. But, he also applied to others where he would have been able to do both music and engineering. In the end, he decided to cancel the auditions he was offered as it’s pretty tough to beat Yale. But if you’re interested in double major, I’ve got info on schools/FA, etc

Thank you that’s very kind - yes DD is on that path; will message you when she has got her list a little shorter….!

Sorry to disagree with you (I agree with @parentologist), but I think Yale is definitely looking for how students will “fit” into the cultural life there. They actually say outright “You should think carefully before submitting supplementary material with your Yale College application” and they don’t really want to see your extracurriculars unless they’ll be part of your life at Yale and show your potential contributions to the arts environment there (which is incredible).

The caution to think carefully about submitting a supplement is because if the talent is not evident, the supplement may actually hurt rather than help.

Submitting a supplement does not mean you are required to participate in music or whatever the supplement is for, nor is there a place on any application materials where you have to make a commitment to participate. (An applicant can certainly write about this in an essay, but that is optional.)

Of course Yale and other schools evaluate supplements in the hope that an applicant will contribute their talent to on campus EC’s. But there is no obligation. And, as I wrote before, there are personal characteristics such as work ethic, discipline, ability to work with others, that are also demonstrated in musical accomplishments.

Not debating further since against TOS.

Yes please let’s not ‘debate’. I simply said I thought Yale was looking for ways in which students might contribute to cultural life on campus (seen through an arts supplement); certainly there is no ‘contract’ or obligation. Have a great day.
