Music supplements

I don’t know where Carleton sends music supplements, if anywhere, outside of the Admission Office for review…but, as for feedback or follow-up, I don’t believe my son (who sent them to every college he applied to) has heard from ANY of them (apart from generic e-mails about how to check application status and such).

To be honest, until you posted, I didn’t think that any colleges would be following up on that in advance of a positive admission decision. My expectation had been (and, I think, remains) that they assume that if music is important to you and you applied, you have a good idea of what’s happening music-wise on their campus and you have checked out the specific things you needed to know that were important to you when coming to an application decision. Of course if you’re admitted, the tables are turned a little and then, yes, I’d expect some yield-inducing follow-up at that point.

I also recall seeing somewhere an “inside” look at a college admission office and one of the revelations being that it was surprising how little impact the arts supplements have on the ultimate decision. If that’s true, then that’s another reason why schools aren’t bending over backwards to follow-up. Of course every college does admissions differently, so you may have applied to a bunch of colleges where music supplements are notable and generate additional interest on the part of the college.

(Note: I apologize for not linking to a source for that “music supplements don’t get much weight” assertion as I’ve searched for it myself in the past couple of weeks – to no avail – having recalled that it was connected to the NPR look at Amherst admissions from a couple years ago: [Online NewsHour: A Look at Amherst College’s Admissions Process – June 22, 2004](http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/education/jan-june04/merrow_6-22.html) If you happen to see it, let me know! And if you see something authoritative to the contrary, I’m just as interested in that.)
