Musical artists you can't stand!!

I hate BOTH kinds of music, country AND western

After all the battles with my dad about “my music”, I thought my kids would like country, but instead they tell me my music is too loud.

@NoVADad99 , I forgot about Kate Bush…I don’t care for her voice. Or Bjork’s

I don’t want to go on and on about Ella Fitzgerald and Cole Porter, but OK. In my opinion, Ella is a jazz vocalist, and Porter’s songs–especially when sung–are not exactly jazz songs. Some of their greatest strength is their clever lyrics (and sometimes poignant lyrics, as in “Love for Sale”). I just think they suffer from a lot of scatting and melismatic riffing. “Love for Sale” should make you cry, not tap your toes. Note: Porter’s songs also have great melodies, which means that many of them can be used as jazz tunes quite effectively. But that’s different from a performance that focuses on the lyrics, and what the song is about.

I understand what you are saying about Ella Fitzgerald, but only partially agree with it. Yes, she uses Cole Porter the way other jazz artists use Porter; she’s not a dramatic interpreter of Porter. But I think that’s legit – not everyone has to do musical theater all the time. And on Porter’s silly songs – the majority of them – she’s aces.

Taste is interesting; I like a large percentage of the artists others have disliked, including ABBA.

But does anybody want to admit to liking “You’re Having My Baby?”

Okay, easy one to hate , Debbie Boone Singing “you light up my life” gag…up there with Afternoon delight…

I like ABBA, the two guys were incredible songwriters in terms of writing hooky, catchy pop songs (they reached their peak with the score for “Chess”, that the idiots couldn’t figure out how to end, really great music in it though, see the staged version they did in 2009 with Josh Groban and Anthony Rapp (*from rent) in it…)

I didn’t like that Debbie Boone song, either–but years ago, we saw her on Broadway in a stage version of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” We thought it was terrific, but it immediately flopped. We saw “Chess” on stage as well, and didn’t like it. Haven’t seen either form of “Mamma Mia.”

Never cared for the Beatles.
Don’t like metal.
Don’t like rap.
Don’t like anything loud/jarring.
Don’t like music where the lyrics aren’t clear/understandable.
If I can’t sing along or harmonize, meh.

(Edit: I know you can sing/harmonize to Beatles music. Just never cared for them.)

I think System of a Down is unbelievably overrated. Oh, and Jack White is NOT one of the greatest guitarists ever.

@Hunt,

Ella is not riffing much in the song books. No scatting. (Excluding Ellington’s. Can’t remember). The song books are not really jazz. They are pop.

I just listened to the Cole Porter song book yesterday. It is fantastic. I love her version of Love For Sale in the Song Book. You don’t tap your toes when listening to Love For Sale.

Miss Otis Regrets. Didn’t tap my toes.

This thread reminds me of a story. I wish I could find the story.

Frank Sinatra and Cole Porter met.

I am paraphrasing.

SInatra said to Porter, “I love your music. Your songs are fantastic”.

And Porter replied, “Then why do you change my songs?”

Rod Stewart, especially “Tonight’s the Night”. Gag.

Can you hate a performer and then over time, inexplicably like them?

I hated Taylor Swift. Somehow, I got over it. Taylor Swift goes into the “tolerable” and sometimes “enjoyable” category. Can’t stand how her people do PR, though. She is over-managed. She would be more likeable if only her PR team would stop being so protective of her “aw shucks” image.

I hated Rod Stewart too when he was at the apex of his career. Somehow, I got over that too. Now, he’s kind of enjoyable.

^ ^ ^

Glen Campbell. I liked him when I was a teen but then threw him into the country/pop genre and ignored him for 40 years. I saw “I’ll Be Me” recently and rediscovered his singing talent and what an unassuming star he is.

^^ Janis Joplin. I did not like her voice for many years, but then read about how different she was in real life than the voice that I heard on the radio. Then one time I listened to her singing “Mercedes Benz” very carefully and it came through that she was having a great time singing that, and at the end you heard her talk and laugh as the track faded out.

My Sharona - it’s like being hooked up to electric shock treatment

Beyoncé, The Beatles, rap music in general, Metallica

I’m surprised and curious about the number of you who have listed the Beatles as a band that you cannot stand. Is it simply that you have reached your maximum lifetime saturation level for their songs and thus simply cannot stand to hear them one more time? Or is it that you find the music intrinsically objectionable, somehow? Or is it impossible to distinguish between the two?

I think they are just overplayed and overrated.

I don’t like the Beatles that much. There are songs I think are great. Yesterday. In the Life. Norwegian Wood. Eleanor Rigby. Something. There are more.

Yet… The Beatles don’t do it for me. I wouldn’t list them in the can’t stand file. That’s a little much.

I don’t need to listen to them.

Yet… I have already heard Ella sing Miss Otis Regrets 7 times today. The voice is incredible. I can listen to it forever.

My wife says I have a little OCD.

Having my Baby by Paul Anka…echhhhh. I bet Paul Anka hates it too.

^ You had to “be there,” ie, when the rage started. It was a cultural and generational thing. And so were were the Stones, in their way.
