Musical Theater College Admission 2025

I’m currently applying to 18 schools, I’ve heard back from these schools so far with prescreen decisions:
Boston Conservatory at Berklee - Yes
Penn State University - Yes
Nazareth University - Yes
Ithaca College - No
Rider University - No

Also scheduled auditions for (either passed academic or bypassed through my college prep program)
NYU
Shenandoah University
Baldwin Wallace University
Oberlin Conservatory
Webster University

Still waiting to hear from
University of Michigan
Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music
Emerson College
Carnegie Mellon University
Pace University
Temple University
&
Western Connecticut University

I love the fact that people are being so honest on this page since, more often then not, we hear about the yes’ more often than the nos.

What do you mean, final decision? You passed your pre-screens or they accepted you into the program? Did you audition? Sorry for all the questions, but we’re still waiting to hear from Rider.

No problem! They Accepted me into the program I participated in a program which allowed me to bypass the prescreen.

How long ii took Carnegie Mellon to respond from the time you applied?
we applied on Nov 12th, but no response yet.

When I submitted to CMU through Acceptd, the post-submission message said that they should notify you within 3 weeks of your submission. I would say that if you don’t hear back from them by December third to maybe call their admissions office.

It certainly is, I passed Penn State and Boston Conservatory’s prescreen but later failed Rider’s. There’s usually very little rhyme or reason as to why you pass or fail a school.

It’s also hard to judge based on other’s experiences since I think a lot about the turn around time depends on when you submit and how many submissions they’re getting at the same time. CMU gets so many submissions and as it gets closer to the deadline, I imagine they have droves to get through which I’m sure impacts how quickly they are able to render decisions.

Anyone still waiting to hear from Boco who submitted by the November 1st deadline? I submitted on November 1st, but still haven’t heard from them. They mentioned on their website mid-end of November, but just want to make sure I don’t have to email them!

I would email them, I submitted my prescreen on October 29th but my recommenders didn’t get their letters in until November 21st. Even then, I ended up getting an email audition invite on the 22nd. I’ve heard that for the most part they’ve gotten all of their prescreens decisions out, so I would definitely reach out

Thank you! I just sent them an email - all my letters of rec were submitted by my teachers before November 18th so hopefully there wasn’t any technical problem!

Thank You very much for your response. We will wait another week then contact them.

What are the pros and cons auditioning on campus vs unifieds?

From what I’ve heard from my college prep program (MTCA), not much in terms of preference. A lot of people say that they favor you as an applicant if you attend in person but, overall, I’ve heard that just isn’t true.

One bonus of going to a school for an OC audition (if they’re also auditioning at Unifieds) is that they might provide campus tours. I’m going to BoCo for my OC audition since they’re my top choice, and I thought that was very sweet that they provide tours after auditioning concluded. In addition to tours, some schools, like from what I’ve seen Nazareth and Marymount Manhattan, will offer ‘meet the faculty’ sessions or general information sessions for parents and auditionees. For both of these instances, however, I’ve realized that the more selective a school is through the prescreen round, the more likely they are to offer these OC audition services. If a school has a large auditioning pool since they didn’t cut it down much through prescreens, they’re far less likely to be able to provide these kinds of things to all applicants. So, in sum, you definitely won’t find these at all OC auditions, but if you pass a prescreen for a school within feasible travel range, I would definitely look into their OC because it might come with some cool perks.

The biggest thing in my opinion, however, is the fact that if you do an OC audition for a school before Unifieds, you’re missing a big rush of applicants. Since some schools tell you right in the room if you’re accepted or not, this might bode like an ED application for a college, giving you better chances of acceptance (since they haven’t seen the big wave of people yet).

One con that I’ve heard of from my friends who’ve gone through this process already is that, since a lot of people choose to do all auditioning through Unifieds, is that there will be less support/time to talk with other applicants. I personally need my “me-time” before auditions so this sounds like a dream come true, but I know that a lot of people like to socialize with the friends they’ve made so far in this process in the holding room. Chances are, a lot of those friends won’t be at OC auditions.

Of course a con is that traveling fees really rack up over time. So, definitely take travel time/cost into consideration when planning auditions.

Hope this helps!

We are still waiting to hear from BoCo and all our materials were submitted on or before October 24th.

Has anyone who has already auditioned received a final decision from Baldwin Wallace? Their website says decision letters will be sent by December 10th.

no, waiting for this as well! They have a virtual audition on December 7th though so that may be why.

when i auditioned in nov they said we would hear Dec 12 but that if you get in that they will call you the day before
