My dog had a horrible seizure

I would have the vet check the thyroid levels, if have not already. We have a lab mix, of unknown age-9-11 years? (rescued dog) that started having seizures just like you described- its a low thyroid condition, common in certain breeds. As long as she is on her thryoid med- no seizures…its a simple enough blood test. Good luck!!!

Two weeks ago our dog had a seizure while at the Kennel while we were out of town for the weekend. Vet did blood work and said all was normal. The animal hospital owns an adjacent kennel, but they have said for the foreseeable future, he will need to board at the animal hospital. This makes me sad, as I don’t think he will get walked as often, won’t be able to socialize with other dogs.

Last night he was trying to lick the dishes in the dishwasher while I was cleaning up, and he suddenly keeled over, seizing. When he came to, he couldn’t stand up. It was if one of his legs was paralyzed. Finally he did stand up, was confused for a couple of minutes, but then seemed to rally. Went outside and urinated (surprised he didn’t lose control during the seizure), came inside and acted relatively normal.

Sad, sad, sad.

So sorry you are going through this.

I am so sorry you’re going through this. It’s so painful when our pets are suffering. (((Hugs)))

My dog had a short seizure last week. I mentioned it to the vet when I dropped him off for boarding while we took a trip over the weekend. The vet on duty called me and said it was time to put him on anti seizure medicine. I reluctantly agreed, as the one she proposed doesn’t have as many side effects as the most commonly used ones.

Last night, my dog was agitated, panting profusely, confused, and physically awkward. He barked constantly for about 30 minutes after I put him in his crate for bed.

Not much different this morning. I feel as though the occasional seizure is much better than what he seems to be experiencing right how. DH agrees.

I’m taking him off this medicine. If he begins to go downhill, so be it, I guess. He is 13 and some change ( a year younger than I had believed), and has had a good life thus far. I hope I’m doing the right thing, but it is almost torture watching him struggle on this medication.

Oh gosh. Give him lots of hugs. They will reassure him and keep him calm.

Dogs are so routine in their normal behavior when something is off you know it. Hugs to your @Nrdsb4 as you go through these challenges with your dog. For the first time our dog is experiencing some physical changes so I understand the stress it brings you.

I think I might be like you and decide that the meds aren’t worth it if he is not himself personality wise. Did the doc say that it would take some time (days? weeks?) for him to adjust to the meds??

I am not sure to what extent dogs and humans are comparable in this area, but in human epilepsy (defined as more than one unexplained seizure for both dogs and humans), there are different options and if one drug doesn’t work well, it doesn’t mean another might not. There are also supplements that may be helpful, including CBD oil: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/news/dietary-supplements-treatment-canine-idiopathic-epilepsy/

One month to the day of the last seizure, he had another one. Bad.

D2 arrived tonight because she has a doctor’s appt. tomorrow. All seemed well until everyone went to bed and I took him out to pee before putting him into his crate. He trotted in as though nothing wrong, then suddenly crashed onto the floor seizing.

The majority of his seizures have occurred when D2 is visiting. She was his first “mom,” then as it often happens, we inherited him. He follows me around as if I am God. He barely acknowledges her when she comes home, yet seems to have these seizures when she comes home to visit. Very odd. It is not always the case. He has had them when she isn’t here. But it seems every time in the last four months that she has come home, he’s had one.

Sigh…

I’m sitting up past my bedtime to observe him because I was told if he has repetitive seizures in one evening I need to rush him to the doggie ER.

Feeling sad AGAIN.

Hugs to you all. This is very sad. You’ll know when it’s time.

I am sorry, I know how stressful this is.

Hugs to you @Nrdsb4 - and hugs to your pup.

So sorry to hear this - all animal lovers never like to see our family furry friends suffer. And we can drive ourselves bonkers trying to think about what caused this latest episode. The correlation with your daughter’s visit may be purely coincidental, or who knows, maybe your dog may have developed an allergy to her perfume. I hope this hasn’t caused your daughter to not want to visit. Hugs to all of you!

We had scary weather last night in Dallas (and NBC WTH??? Didn’t break away from the Cowboys game to inform the viewers that a tornado was ripping through Dallas???). The tornado did not hit my current neighborhood.

Our old neighborhood, where we recently bought a house so we could move back, sustained a direct hit. I have a lump in my throat looking at photos on Twitter of our neighborhood. Won’t be able to get in to assess the damage to our property for awhile, I don’t think. But it’s really not important. Recent assessment showed that the old house was barely standing because of termite damage, so we had to tear it down. But in assessing the lot recently for re-building, DH and I were arguing over how any trees must come down. That may be a moot point now. Though it looks like some houses may be a total loss, they were big and sturdy, so at least protected the lives of the folks inside. Haven’t heard about any deaths/injuries. I think the shopping center where I’ve been getting my hair done for over 20 years may be gone.

Anyway, dog was terrified, absolutely freaking out with the sirens and thunder, lightning, and wind. I watched him closely the next few hours but surprisingly, no seizure. Our cat acted very casual through the whole thing, but just happened to stroll in during the worst of it and park herself by my side.

So glad no one was hurt and the fur babies made it through OK but I’m very sorry to hear about the damage.

Our older dog may have had a stroke this morning. He couldn’t get up the stairs when I went to take a nap; his back legs just weren’t working and he has a serious tremor in his front legs. (He’s always had a slight tremor.) DH is taking him to the vet tomorrow afternoon. He’s 12 1/2 and has been the best dog ever. We’ve lost two others in the past but this one will really bother me.

@VeryHappy, that sounds very serious. So sorry. :frowning:

@Nrdsb4 : Thanks. And I’m very sorry about the storm in your old/new neighborhood. Mother Nature isn’t getting any gentler.

So sorry for the house @Nrdsb4 and thhe doggie, @VeryHappy

After a tough week with multiple seizures and very long, disturbing post-ictal behavior, we made the very tough decision to say goodbye to our sweet, loyal, loving little pal today.

Letting him go was very gut wrenching. He almost seemed like he knew what we were about to do. I’ve been crying most of the afternoon, but our vet told us we were doing the right thing and that is a comfort to me.

So long to our buddy Sparky. You were a great little fellow.
