Just wanted this part to get emphasized again. So whether it’s in-state pricing that’s desired or geographic proximity, this one is likely to get checkmarks for both aspects.
It’s been four days - hopefully OP will come back, and explain the restrictions (like is even a SUNY acceptable?).
Otherwise, we can’t help them.
Maybe they simply needed to vent.
First of all the 529 money is only yours because your parents saved the money from their own earnings, secondly you can’t apply for FAFSA without your parents providing income information, and thirdly you also can’t get loans without a co-signer. You also don’t seem to grasp the long term financial implications of having loans that will take you 10-15 years to pay off. Given the salary you’re likely to be able to command in your intended field of study, once your loan payments are factored in, you’ll most likely be living in very tightly constrained financial conditions…for 10-15 years or more. You say right now you don’t care because you’re blinded by the shiny “sleep away camp” college experience that you want, but once you graduate it’s very likely you’d come to regret having taken on that level of expense to pay for it. Beyond that, having the obligation to pay back loans post-graduation may require you to pass up some potential employment opportunities due to having high levels of debt to pay off.
So no, you can’t “pay for your education” without your parents’ assistance and saying that finances aren’t an issue is a rather selfish perspective when it’s not you who’ll primarily be footing the bill. The real crux of the issue here is that you want
the like “4 year college experience” with dorms and fraternities and good sports and to make friends
While it’s understandable that you want a traditional 4 year on-campus experience, you need to realize that it’s a luxury good. Many many students don’t get to have that experience. Post-secondary education is first and foremost about education. The 4 year residential college experience is bells and whistles. What you need to focus on is ensuring that you find the right academic fit that’s affordable for you and your family.
