My Son Bought A Motorcycle

I can beat this… my D2 wanted to buy a motorcycle for when she moves to LA in October! I absolutely put my foot down and said no way. She’s 23 and I said it anyway. If she wants one, we will not contribute any effort whatsoever toward her move (that includes not only money, but time).

That being said, lovely D2 is going to the foremost stunt school in the country in Seattle in late July. It is three weeks; she is choosing the optional fourth week, which is aerial stunt work. She officially registered Friday, and has started to talk a bit more about it now that it’s a done deal. I’ve cut her off several times, saying, “This is more detail than I need to know considering I will be thousands of miles away!”

Having been a claims adjuster for many years handling wrongful death/serious injury claims, I will refrain from describing some of the motorcycle accidents I had to handle.

As gruesome as it sounds, wish I had made copies of some of the photos from the traffic homicide reports to show my son when he “talks” about wanting a motorcycle (he’s 16)… yeah, not a good thing.

I was closely involved with a horrible motorcycle incident when I was a teenager and from the day our son was born I have made DH and later my son promise that neither would ever even ride on a motorcycle. I’ve never been above bribery, it’s been very effective with my firstborn! When he was old enough to understand, I promised him $10,000 on his 30th Birthday for complete motorcycle abstinence!! We talk about it from time to time - he understands the horror of my fear and is willingly complying! He has great plans for that $$. Now if I had just thought to add really large snakes to that bribe…

Oy. Sending you virtual hugs.

this is the most rational course of action, under the circumstances.

I won’t tell the tragic story, for the sake of OP, but Please make him promise he will put the bike away if he decides to have children, until they are grown up.

Good luck. It never ends, does it?

“Making the decision to have a child - it’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body.” - Elizabeth Stone

Or to go riding motorcycles, as the case may be. Hugs, OP.

“Please make him promise he will put the bike away if he decides to have children, until they are grown up.”

My DH and I put our bikes away when I became pregnant and we both miss it terribly 18 years later. We are planning to get bikes again once DS is off to college. I agree that city driving is dangerous. I was hit by a car, pushed off the rode by a city bus and had plenty of near misses. DH raced professionally and still was hit by a car in the city. Still, it was great not to sit in traffic and CA winding roads are made for motorcylces.
