Gap year-- assume the D will ask for an official withdrawal. And then she can go back!
All I know is OP said ‘future school’. So…we are likely missing some information!
Sorry about the F but glad it did not lead to suspension/expulsion. Kudos to your D for still taking the final exam.
I hope the gap year turns out well.
Also want to mention that it sounds like you did a great job supporting your D. I expect that with your help she will get past this, learn from the mistake, and move forward in a positive manner.
Many schools offer grade forgiveness where she can retake the class and replace the grade for gpa. It will show that she retook it.
She needs to ask if this is a possibility!
Professional schools will require a student to explain the F since all incidents of academic dishonesty are required to be reported.
It might not be a bad idea for her to inquire about whether the incident will go on her college transcript.
Your D should ask if it will appear as an F or an F with an asterisk or x next to it. A straight F on the transcript does not convey it was for academic dishonesty, but an F with a special notation next to it (usually an “X”) signifies failure due to an academic infraction. The transcript will have a key on it that indicates what the notation means.
An F may not require much of an explanation, but an Fx will. The university should let you know which one will appear.
